This document outlines a study on the role of community colleges in rural community development. It discusses the background and context, including challenges faced by rural communities. Three case studies of colleges in different rural regions are presented. Common themes found across the cases include resource industries in transition, education and training strategies, and economic development approaches. The colleges act as key partners but face challenges like lack of support and strategic planning. Lessons indicate a need for more inclusive social networks and awareness of social/environmental issues, in addition to economic focuses. Future research implications involve policies to better facilitate local capital and integrated development.
