- Wikipedia is written and edited by members of the public. It isn’t perfect but is extremely successful. Open Source Software is written by anyone and given away freely rather than commercial organisations like microsoft writing software then selling it. The iPhone runs off Linux/GNU software (often incorrectly called Linux). Google was originally one of several search engines. The others like Yahoo and Altavista used people like Librarians to organise web pages and to rank which ones came up first in a search. Google’s key clever idea (and how it is one of the most sucessful companies in the world) was to use crowd sourcing to rank pages. Google’s computers went out onto the web and counted how many times people linked to other pages. When you used a search term Google looked for pages with that word on and arranged the results with those most linked to at the top. In effect, everyone producing web page links was producing Google’s ranking of pages.
- When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans people were worried about friends and family. They were asking questions and posting information in online forums but this is hopeless when you are trying to find out what is happening on your friend’s street or nieghbourhood. So two web programmers got together and created a web map based on Google Maps in an evening allowing people to post information and look at other info. It gathered ‘tons of markers and information’ in 24 hours. It was scipionus.com and has since dissappeared from the web. However, it wasn’t perfect, it suffered from vandalism and people not understanding what it was about (see the markers in the middle of the ocean?)
- Not all countries have our excellent mapping coverage with Ordance Survey and commercial Companies like A to Z. Google allow people in these areas (blue on the map) to upload their own data to Google’s databases. However, they reserve some rights on the data you enter unlike OSM (below) It’s explained in detail in the video. Another organisation doing similar things is called Open Street Map. They are non commercial and collect mapping data in the UK as well as other places so that people can use the data for free. Just recently OSM have been very sucessful in mapping Haiti from satellite images to help with the earthquake recovery.
- Someone suggested people twitter what snowfall they were experiencing in the big snow falls of January 09. People twitter using certain code words to mark time, location and intensity of snow fall (1 to 10 scale). Computers on the web could then harvest this information and visuailise it in Google Earth as shown. Watch the animation to see the result. Size of circle is intensity of snow fall. There are problems with this, the population isn’t evenly spread, there were many more points in London than in Rural Wales. Also, people were asleep at night so there was very little data at 4am. People interpreted the scale differently so someones intensity 9 snowfall was probably someone elses intensity 5. Despite these problems it proves that the concept has a lot of potential. For example Geography at Southampton is currently looking at collecting photos from mobile phones of people in floods. These photos can be used to fix levels of flood water at certain times which is useful data to model how floods will occur in the future.
