• President Obama, Inauguration Speech (1/20/09)
   – "Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential
oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of
prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often
the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging
storms. At these moments, America has carried on not
simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office,
but because We the People have remained faithful to the
ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding
documents. So it has been. So it must be with this
     generation of Americans."
Definition s
• Critical
   – ˈkri-ti-kəl of, relating to, or being a turning point
or specially important juncture <a critical phase>
• Crossroads
   – ˈkrȯs-ˌrōd also -ˈrōd a crucial point especially
where a decision must be made
• Transition
   – tran(t)-ˈsi-shən a movement, development, or
evolution from one form, stage, or style to
     another
Prophetic Declaration

• Bishop William Murphy, Jr. (January 2011)

“We have now entered a new season for
a new kind of war. This warfare is not
just after killing men, but also the
things that men believe. This period
will determine and position us for
                future generations.”
Church Trends
• Samuel Chand (Leadership Coach, Mentor, & Consultant) – 1/3/11
    – Staffing (reducing paid staff and increasing unpaid staff;
      redefining ‘volunteerism’, short-term assignments)
    – Transitions (Senior Pastors especially are wondering about their
      next chapter of life.)
    – Succession (“This is a tsunami that has started hitting the U.S.
church in particular. Over 80% of churches are not prepared or
      even preparing!)
    – Technology (The pace of technology now has churches being
      reactive…)
Church Trends
• Samuel Chand (Leadership Coach, Mentor, & Consultant) – 1/3/11
    – Non-Denominational Organizations & Fellowships
(Denominations are marginalized and declining. Some see them
as irrelevant, increasing the multitude of ‘fellowships’ and
‘groups’ with common causes and diversity in all other things)
    – Non-Member Regular Attendee (Fastest growing tribe in which
they will attend the same church for years and never join.)
    – Development Vs. Training (Training is about a task and
development is about a person. Many churches have highly
      trained and poorly developed leaders.)
    – Graying of America (# of people older than 65 in US will
      continue to increase)
The Church - Crit ical Cross roads

• THE CHURCH WORLD IS AT A CRITICAL CROSSROADS.
   – Rely on leadership that exists now and just wait for others to
come in OR raise up the next generation of leadership now
   – Focus solely on the conferences & church service OR build a 12-
month movement that radically changes lives on a local and
     global level
   – Focus on ‘churching’ only OR build a balanced approach that
involves teaching, demonstrative learning, and innovative
     methods
   – Allow superficial differences in style, music, etc. to divide OR use
those (potential divisions) as opportunities to become wiser and
more unified in our resolve to build Christ’ Kingdom
The Church - Crit ical Cross roads

• THE CHURCH WORLD IS AT A CRITICAL CROSSROADS.
   – Allow superficial differences in style, music, color, etc. to divide
OR use those (potential divisions) as opportunities to become
wiser and more unified in our resolve to build Christ’ Kingdom
   – Partner with the church community for resources and ministry
opportunities OR build strategic alliances with church AND non-
ministry related entities that will minister to everyone’s real
     needs
   – Inconsistently incorporate technology into our efforts OR
strategically and innovatively weave technology and Web 2.0 into
     everything that we do.
The Church - Crit ical Cross roads

• WE SHOULD NOT BE AT A CROSSROADS WITH:
  – The Sufficiency of Scripture (Prov. 30:5)
  – Doctrine of Jesus Christ (Acts 4: 12)
  – Necessity & Power of the Church (Matt. 16: 18, 19)
  – Doctrine of Heaven & Hell (Matt. 7: 13-14; Matt. 25: 41; Heb. 9: 27b; Luke
      16: 24; Rev. 20: 1-15)
      • Eliminates universalism teaching
  – Tolerance & Love does not mean compromise (Rom. 12: 18-21; Phil. 2:
      15-16; Heb. 10: 24; John 13: 35)
  – Issue of Forgiveness, Justification, & Grace (Eph. 2: 1-8)
  – Issue of Marriage & Sexuality (Heb. 13: 4; Gen. 1; Eph. 5: 22-33)
People are being blinded of the TRUTH.
• 2 Corinthians 4: 4
   – “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of
them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious
gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine
     unto them.”
• 2 Corinthians 11: 14
   – “… for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. “
• John 8: 44
   – “… for he (satan) is a liar, and the father of it.”
What do we do?

• Where in scripture does the
Bible give us a principle for
  being at a crossroads?
• Red Sea Vs. Jordan River
  Crossing
Exodus 14
• (15) And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou
unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go
forward: (16) But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine
hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel
shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.
• (21) And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the
LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that
night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were
divided. (22) And the children of Israel went into the midst of
the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto
them on their right hand, and on their left.
Exodus 14
• (26) And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand
over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the
Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.
  (27) And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and
  the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared;
and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the
Egyptians in the midst of the sea.
Exodus 14
• (28) And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and
the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the
sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them.
  (29) But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the
midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on
their right hand, and on their left. (30) Thus the LORD saved
Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw
the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore.
Exodus 14
• (31) And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon
the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed
the LORD, and his servant Moses.
Learning From Scripture

         Red Sea Crossing Facts
    • Water parting
       – Moses lifts His rod
       – God sends a strong wind
       – Sea is turned into dry
         ground
    • 2-3 million total people crossed
    • Enemy drowned when they
      attempted to cross
Joshua 3
• (7) And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to
magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know
that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee. (8) And thou
shalt command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant,
saying, When ye are come to the brink of the water of Jordan,
ye shall stand still in Jordan.
Joshua 3
• (12) Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of
Israel, out of every tribe a man. (13) And it shall come to
pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear
the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the
waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off
from the waters that come down from above; and they shall
  stand upon an heap.
Joshua 3
• (14) And it came to pass, when the people removed from
their tents, to pass over Jordan, and the priests bearing the
ark of the covenant before the people; (15) And as they that
bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the
priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water,
(for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,)
Joshua 3
• (16) That the waters which came down from above stood and
rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is
beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of
the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the
people passed over right against Jericho. (17) And the priests
that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on
dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed
over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean
  over Jordan.
Learning From Scripture
      Jordan River Crossing Facts
  • Water parting
     – Waited for 3 days for instructions
       (Obedience)
     – Consecration of the people (Spiritual
       Preparation)
     – Priest must step in first (Acts of Faith)
     – Keep eyes on ark & follow it (Presence
       of God)
     – Appoint 1 leader from each tribe
       (Delegated Leadership)
  • 2-3 million total people crossed
  • Word “nation” used prominently
Comparing The Two

Red Sea (Obedience of a Leader)
                  Vs.
Jordan River (Obedient feet of the people)
Comparing The Two

      • Same Power (of God)
  • Same Promises (from God)
• Different Process (through God)
Acts 17: 16 - 34
• (16) Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was
stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.
• (32) And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead,
some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this
matter. (33) So Paul departed from among them. (34)
Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the
which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named
  Damaris, and others with them.
Acts 17: 16 - 34
• God has given us a market that we can operate in, but we
have to prepare our ministry to be marketed.
   – When in Athens, Paul had not planned to preach but an
     opportunity presented itself. (1 Cor. 16: 9)
      • Athens – a religious center of Greece, an intellectual
center, and a place of wealth, full of idols, home of
        Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.
      • Paul was stirred in his spirit (what stirs you?)
   – Paul understood that the ministry needed to go outside
the walls of the Synagogue into the marketplace (Verse
     17).
Acts 17: 16 - 34
• The same plan cannot be used in every place!
      • People of Berea received the Word gladly
      • People of Thessalonica were rebellious, didn’t want to
        hear the Word
      • People of Corinth were well educated and were ‘well-
        off’
      • Epicureans were people who lived for
        entertainment/pleasure
      • Stoicks were intellectuals, they rationalized / processed
        everything
      • Paul presented in front of Areopagus (Supreme Court)
Acts 17: 16 - 34
• The same plan cannot be used in every place!
       • If we are going to market our ministry, we have to
broaden our knowledge about society and who we’re
         called to minister.
• Marketing (promotion, advertising, push)
   – A set of processes that are connected & interdependent
with other functions whose methods can be improved by
using a variety of relatively new approaches.
   – Christianity is strange in the marketplace (v. 20-21)
   – Paul started with what they knew, not just criticize them
     (v. 22-23)
Proverbs 11: 30

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of
life; and he that winneth souls is
               wise. (KJV)
1 Corinthian s 9: 19

For though I be free from all men,
yet have I made myself servant
unto all, that I might gain the
             more. (KJV)

  • 17. • President Obama, Inauguration Speech (1/20/09) – "Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents. So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans."
  • 18. Definition s • Critical – ˈkri-ti-kəl of, relating to, or being a turning point or specially important juncture <a critical phase> • Crossroads – ˈkrȯs-ˌrōd also -ˈrōd a crucial point especially where a decision must be made • Transition – tran(t)-ˈsi-shən a movement, development, or evolution from one form, stage, or style to another
  • 19. Prophetic Declaration • Bishop William Murphy, Jr. (January 2011) “We have now entered a new season for a new kind of war. This warfare is not just after killing men, but also the things that men believe. This period will determine and position us for future generations.”
  • 20. Church Trends • Samuel Chand (Leadership Coach, Mentor, & Consultant) – 1/3/11 – Staffing (reducing paid staff and increasing unpaid staff; redefining ‘volunteerism’, short-term assignments) – Transitions (Senior Pastors especially are wondering about their next chapter of life.) – Succession (“This is a tsunami that has started hitting the U.S. church in particular. Over 80% of churches are not prepared or even preparing!) – Technology (The pace of technology now has churches being reactive…)
  • 21. Church Trends • Samuel Chand (Leadership Coach, Mentor, & Consultant) – 1/3/11 – Non-Denominational Organizations & Fellowships (Denominations are marginalized and declining. Some see them as irrelevant, increasing the multitude of ‘fellowships’ and ‘groups’ with common causes and diversity in all other things) – Non-Member Regular Attendee (Fastest growing tribe in which they will attend the same church for years and never join.) – Development Vs. Training (Training is about a task and development is about a person. Many churches have highly trained and poorly developed leaders.) – Graying of America (# of people older than 65 in US will continue to increase)
  • 22. The Church - Crit ical Cross roads • THE CHURCH WORLD IS AT A CRITICAL CROSSROADS. – Rely on leadership that exists now and just wait for others to come in OR raise up the next generation of leadership now – Focus solely on the conferences & church service OR build a 12- month movement that radically changes lives on a local and global level – Focus on ‘churching’ only OR build a balanced approach that involves teaching, demonstrative learning, and innovative methods – Allow superficial differences in style, music, etc. to divide OR use those (potential divisions) as opportunities to become wiser and more unified in our resolve to build Christ’ Kingdom
  • 23. The Church - Crit ical Cross roads • THE CHURCH WORLD IS AT A CRITICAL CROSSROADS. – Allow superficial differences in style, music, color, etc. to divide OR use those (potential divisions) as opportunities to become wiser and more unified in our resolve to build Christ’ Kingdom – Partner with the church community for resources and ministry opportunities OR build strategic alliances with church AND non- ministry related entities that will minister to everyone’s real needs – Inconsistently incorporate technology into our efforts OR strategically and innovatively weave technology and Web 2.0 into everything that we do.
  • 24. The Church - Crit ical Cross roads • WE SHOULD NOT BE AT A CROSSROADS WITH: – The Sufficiency of Scripture (Prov. 30:5) – Doctrine of Jesus Christ (Acts 4: 12) – Necessity & Power of the Church (Matt. 16: 18, 19) – Doctrine of Heaven & Hell (Matt. 7: 13-14; Matt. 25: 41; Heb. 9: 27b; Luke 16: 24; Rev. 20: 1-15) • Eliminates universalism teaching – Tolerance & Love does not mean compromise (Rom. 12: 18-21; Phil. 2: 15-16; Heb. 10: 24; John 13: 35) – Issue of Forgiveness, Justification, & Grace (Eph. 2: 1-8) – Issue of Marriage & Sexuality (Heb. 13: 4; Gen. 1; Eph. 5: 22-33)
  • 25. People are being blinded of the TRUTH. • 2 Corinthians 4: 4 – “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” • 2 Corinthians 11: 14 – “… for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. “ • John 8: 44 – “… for he (satan) is a liar, and the father of it.”
  • 26. What do we do? • Where in scripture does the Bible give us a principle for being at a crossroads? • Red Sea Vs. Jordan River Crossing
  • 27. Exodus 14 • (15) And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward: (16) But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea. • (21) And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. (22) And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.
  • 28. Exodus 14 • (26) And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen. (27) And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.
  • 29. Exodus 14 • (28) And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them. (29) But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. (30) Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore.
  • 30. Exodus 14 • (31) And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.
  • 31. Learning From Scripture Red Sea Crossing Facts • Water parting – Moses lifts His rod – God sends a strong wind – Sea is turned into dry ground • 2-3 million total people crossed • Enemy drowned when they attempted to cross
  • 32. Joshua 3 • (7) And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee. (8) And thou shalt command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are come to the brink of the water of Jordan, ye shall stand still in Jordan.
  • 33. Joshua 3 • (12) Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man. (13) And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an heap.
  • 34. Joshua 3 • (14) And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over Jordan, and the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people; (15) And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,)
  • 35. Joshua 3 • (16) That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho. (17) And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.
  • 36. Learning From Scripture Jordan River Crossing Facts • Water parting – Waited for 3 days for instructions (Obedience) – Consecration of the people (Spiritual Preparation) – Priest must step in first (Acts of Faith) – Keep eyes on ark & follow it (Presence of God) – Appoint 1 leader from each tribe (Delegated Leadership) • 2-3 million total people crossed • Word “nation” used prominently
  • 37. Comparing The Two Red Sea (Obedience of a Leader) Vs. Jordan River (Obedient feet of the people)
  • 38. Comparing The Two • Same Power (of God) • Same Promises (from God) • Different Process (through God)
  • 39. Acts 17: 16 - 34 • (16) Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. • (32) And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter. (33) So Paul departed from among them. (34) Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
  • 40. Acts 17: 16 - 34 • God has given us a market that we can operate in, but we have to prepare our ministry to be marketed. – When in Athens, Paul had not planned to preach but an opportunity presented itself. (1 Cor. 16: 9) • Athens – a religious center of Greece, an intellectual center, and a place of wealth, full of idols, home of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. • Paul was stirred in his spirit (what stirs you?) – Paul understood that the ministry needed to go outside the walls of the Synagogue into the marketplace (Verse 17).
  • 41. Acts 17: 16 - 34 • The same plan cannot be used in every place! • People of Berea received the Word gladly • People of Thessalonica were rebellious, didn’t want to hear the Word • People of Corinth were well educated and were ‘well- off’ • Epicureans were people who lived for entertainment/pleasure • Stoicks were intellectuals, they rationalized / processed everything • Paul presented in front of Areopagus (Supreme Court)
  • 42. Acts 17: 16 - 34 • The same plan cannot be used in every place! • If we are going to market our ministry, we have to broaden our knowledge about society and who we’re called to minister. • Marketing (promotion, advertising, push) – A set of processes that are connected & interdependent with other functions whose methods can be improved by using a variety of relatively new approaches. – Christianity is strange in the marketplace (v. 20-21) – Paul started with what they knew, not just criticize them (v. 22-23)
