CRITIQUE OF PERSONAL READING BOOK:

(7 MIRACLES THAT SAVED
AMERICA)
By Michael Peterson
S.O.A.P.S.TONE BREAKDOWN
Subject:
The theme and idea of this book is that America as a nation has been
preserved by god (or outer force) because this nation is essential to
produce and emit freedom and liberty to other countries throughout the
world. The way Chris and Ted Stewart portray this idea is through the
analysis of seven different events in our history that, if been able to come
out differently, would have greatly and negatively our daily lives as
Americans. The critiques of these “miracles” are both extremely
detailed and in depth and provides a new perspective of our past and
possible futures.
Occasion:
Having this book portray many different aspects of our
nations past both distant and more present, it is impossible
to talk about a certain time period and place in which this
book takes place. On the large scale however this book,
which can be perceived as an historical record, does a great
job at relating events of the past and discussing how the
current state of the united states would have changed had
those particular events not taken place.
Audience:
The intended audience for this particular book is an older
reader (high school or older) with a more developed
vocabulary. This book’s main idea is not one that is hard to
understand however there are times when the level of
complicated word choice can obscure the thought trying to
be portrayed, and are a reader you need to be able to
account for that.
Purpose:
This book is non-fiction and demonstrates historical
examples of events that where pivotal moments in our
nations history, yet the purpose of this book was not to
talk about the historical events individually but to link them
together to show evidence that America’s fate has been
preserved and aided by god so that we as a nation can
preform duties and be an example of exemplary attributes to
the rest of the world.
Style:
The way in which these two authors present the information
and historical evidence is analogous (in my mind at least) to
the way in which a respected older friend would present the
information to a younger individual. The book makes you
feel like you are sitting down to hear a story and as such
draws you in and captivates you as a listener as apposed to
purely dry and concrete evidence that is uninteresting and
hard to listen to.
Tone:
The tone in this book is one that is quite interesting in that
the many experiences, stories and historical events leads the
reader to think one of two things, either there is divine
intervention in history of our nation or it was all just chance
and a super lucky roll of the dice. In the end the authors ask
the reader’s consideration of the first option. This is done in
a way that places all the facts on the table and almost in a
concerned tone asks you to decide for yourself, with an
underlying hint to go one way over the other.
“ Many are inclined to conclude that god... had nothing
to do with the outcomes of these episodes...but for
some of us...something inside us seems to whisper
“These things are true”...we ought to recognize it.”
:282-283
SUMMARY
This book begins by stating that America has been preserved and helped along in
times of desperate need so that we could represent the idea of liberty and freedom to
other nations across the world. To do this the Authors Chris and Ted Stewart provide
7 examples or “Miracles” of times when our country has succeeded in the face of
almost certain failure or at the best unlikely odds. These miracles are: “The unlikely
discovery of America by Christopher Columbus” and how his background and
ambition shouldn’t have been enough to get him across the ocean but did
anyway.“How and why desperate english colonists were able to survive the (starving
time) at Jamestown,” which once you read the story you truly understand the
malnourishment pain and suffering these early americans went through and how both
changes in weather and good timing prevented them from giving up and going home
allowing them to stay and become the first successful english colony and the seed for
the later country. “ “The battle of NewYork during the revolutionary war” is the next
miracle discussed where you really have to look at the fact that a totally random
change in weather allowing the American army to escape the grasp of Britain can’t
have just been a lucky occurrence. “The miraculous creation of the united states
constitution” and the impossible mixing of ideas from people not willing to
compromise yet still being able to find a way to make ends meet just before certain
events in history that happened in Europe that probably would have caused some of
The last three miracles being a little closer to todays day and age include
“Abraham Lincoln’s desperate prayer that turned the tide of the civil war at
Gettysburg” in which president Lincoln was forced to call upon the power of
prayer and through that experience remain calm during one of the bloodiest
battles in world history.” “How a series extraordinary events changed the
battle of Midway during WWII” This was probably my favorite chapter
because of his vivid descriptions of both American and Japanese battle
strategies as well as individual accounts of what really happened, from
generals on both sides of the fight and pilots flying for the U.S.. The Last
Miracle being “The preservation of Ronald Reagan’s life from an assassin’s,
bullet allowing hime the time he needed to help extend freedom around the
world.” Accounts of individuals learning about the very existence of Reagan
from the confines of Russian torture homes as well as the story of the
presidents ability to negotiate meaningfully with Mikhail Gorbachev and slowly
defeat communism is what makes up a lot of this chapter as well as provide a
strong point and reason why the country is being preserved today. I really
enjoyed reading this book and learning about events in our history as well as
the undeniable fact the we as a country are special and with that I would
recommend this book to anyone with the desire to read it.
Creative Rating System
I would give this book 6 out of 7 miracles due to it’s
incredible accounts and stories as well as it’s ability to pull
the reader in and hypnotize them to read further. The only
reason I would choose 6/7 instead of a perfect score would
be the occasional use of continuous high level vocabulary
that sometimes made the story hard to follow.
