This presentation has been used to guide workshops on research and academic writing conventions for upperclassman and first-year graduate students. However, it could be adapted for a first and second year student audience. The content is rich, emphasizing reflection, research/inquiry, as well as grammar. This material also demonstrates how to use new media as part of an overall research strategy. The presentation is designed to be presented interactively with writers across the disciplines, multilingual writers, and any writer unfamiliar with the academic writing process. The content is not linear, as many slides could be clipped and customized for integration into a first-year writing course, or even a session or workshop for graduate student writers of any classification.

Writing Literature Reviews

This presentation is for research writers, both advanced undergraduate writers and graduate students (even junior faculty needed writing support!). It assumes that the reader is familiar with the basic purpose of the literature review, and delves deeply into *how* the writer might compose this part of the research article. It also assumes that the technical features of this difficult genre are underestimated, and thereby approaches the literature review as a *drama.* Research writers should feel free to draw on the presentation for strategies that will enable them to articulate their understanding of how their research problem influences the way their field talks about and acts in regards to this problem. Specifically, an examination of grammar as code for drama is explored.

The template has also been used to enable students to create a class handout for a discussion they lead about an assigned article. This template could function as a study guide that prepares students for a quiz, synthesis essay, or in-depth class discussion about the conventions of academic writing. Regardless, the content would help instructors create lesson plans about academic writing conventions and college-level standards of reading comprehension.

Designed to be an interactive presentation, the content is flexible enough to accommodate a wide range of academic and career goals. In particular, I have used this presentation to address undergraduates, mostly freshman. For example, the Letter of Inquiry discussion addresses some 'best practices' of requesting letters of recommendation.

Description, Identity, and Rhetoric: Visualizing the Available Means of Pers...

This powerpoint contextualizes the importance of narration and description through their relationship to rhetoric and identity. Argumentation and rhetorical analysis are described as heuristics for rhetoric. Slides on rhetorical analysis link such inquiry to self-reflection and the visualization of opportunities to connect to audiences, as well as invites occasions for argumentation. Lecture notes, discussion questions, free-writing exercises, and collaborative workshop activities enable students to sharpen their narration/description skills. This powerpoint does not exhaustively cover specific narration techniques such as utilizing active verbs to create narrative perspective, but students are encouraged to reflect on this strategy throughout the slides "showing not telling." Some slides are in conversation with the textbooks Envision (2nd Edition) by Christine Alfano and Alyssa O'Brien, and Christine Latterell's Remix (2nd Edition). Instructors may omit slides that deal with these external materials. The contents of this presentation may be approached as a series of interactive discussions intended to be spread out over the course of two to three class periods.
