The International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM) oversees ten Consultative Committees (CCs) that provide recommendations in their respective fields of metrology. Membership in the CCs is open to institutions from BIPM Member States that are recognized as experts in their field through activities like establishing national standards, publishing research, and participating in international comparisons. The CCs may also include relevant intergovernmental organizations. Observer status can be granted to those institutes that actively participate but do not yet meet all membership criteria. The CIPM reviews CC membership every four years and can remove or change member status.
