ENGLISH GAMES: CRICKET
 Sport with two
opposing teams of
11 players who
attempt to score
points by hitting a
ball with a bat and
running between two
wickets; teams
alternate between
offense (at the bat)
and defense (in the
field).
Field
 Oval surface covered
with natural or synthetic
grass on which a cricket
match is played; it is
made up of a pitch
and a field.
Pitch
 Rectangular surface in
midfield where the
bowler and the
batsman face each
other; it contains two
wickets that are 20m
apart.
Wicket
 Wicket: Piece made up of stumps
with detachable bails; the wicket is
considered toppled when at least
one of the bails falls.
 Stump: The three vertical pieces
that make up the wicket; the space
between the stumps is smaller than
the diameter of the ball.
 Bail: The two horizontal pieces
balanced on top of the stumps;
they fall over when the ball strikes
the wicket.
Cricket player: batsman
 Player who takes
position to hit the ball;
like all cricketers, this
player wears the
traditional white or
cream white.
Bat
 Piece formed of a flat
section connected to a
rubber-covered handle
that the batsman uses to
hit the ball; its maximum
length is 38 inches.
Cricket ball
 Hard ball with a
circumference of
9 inches; it is made
with a cork core,
which is wound with
thread and covered
with leather.
