Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Knowledge engineering: from people to machines and back
Creative critical reflection 3
1.
2. RESEARCH
• WHIST IN THE PREPARATION PROCESS BEFORE OUR PRODUCTION, AS A PRODUCTION TEAM
WE BUILT A FOUNDATION OF KNOWLEDGE AROUND PINTEREST GENRE OF OUR FILM: A DRAMA.
• I BEGAN GAINING INSPIRATION FOR OUR FILM BY LOOKING AT VARIOUS DRAMA FILM
OPENINGS ON THE WEBSITE; ART OF THE TITLE. IT ALLOWED ME TO GAIN A DEEPER INSIGHT
INTO DIFFERENT FONTS, EDITING TECHNIQUE AND GRAPHICS THAT WE COULD USE IN OUR OWN
FILM OPENING
• I CHOSE SOME FILM OPENINGS SEQUENCES THAT WERE SIMILAR TO THE THEME OF OUR FILM
OPENING SUCH AS; BIG LITTLE LIES, A SIMPLE FAVOUR AND GOSSIP GIRL
3. RESEARCH
• IN ORDER TO GAIN A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF THE
THEMES AND IDEA PRESENT IN OUR FILM ‘INFAMOUS’ WE
RESEARCHED AND CREATED PINTEREST BOARDS TO PUT
ACROSS OUR TOPICAL ISSUES WHICH SURROUND OUR
FILM OPENING
• I CONTINUED TO DEVELOP THE RESEARCH PHASE
FURTHER AND DUG DEEPER INTO MY GENRE. AS A RESULT I
CREATED AN AUDIENCE QUESTIONNAIRE AND
AN AUDIENCE POWERPOINT TO HELP ME UNDERSTAND
WHAT AN AUDIENCE WANTS FROM A FILM. I WAS ABLE TO
EVALUATE THE RESULTS FROM THE QUESTIONNAIRE
WHICH HELPED ME IN THE PLANNING AND
CONSTRUCTION PHASE TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT
CAPTIVATED AN AUDIENCE, FROM THE TRAILER ITSELF TO
POSTERS. FILM OPENINGS AND SOCIAL MEDIA.
• OUR KEY THEMES INCLUDE
• CELEBRITY LIFE
• WEALTH
• SOCIAL CLASS
• MOTHERHOOD
• EACH PINTEREST BOARD WE MADE PROVIDED A
COLLAGE OF IMAGES THAT BEST PORTRAYS EACH
THEME. FOR EXAMPLE, WEALTH AND CELEBRITY LIFE
IS REPRESENTED THROUGH IMAGES OF LUXURIOUS,
DESIGNER CLOTHES AND PAPARAZZI IMAGES TO
SHOW FAME
4. RESEARCH
• DURING THE PROCESS OF CREATING OUR PRELIMINARY EXERCISES, THIS ALLOWED
US TO BROADEN THE TECHNIQUES AVAILABLE TO US IN THE MAKING OF OUR
PRODUCTION. THE AIM OF DOING PRELIMINARY EXERCISE IS TO IDENTIFY WITH
CAMERA WORK, LIGHTING AND EDITING SKILLS.
• THIS INCLUDES DIFFERENT FORMS OF LIGHTING, TRANSITIONS AND SHOT TYPES
• ALSO, I MANAGED TO CREATE AN OPENING SEQUENCE AS PART OF MY CONTINUITY
EXERCISE WHICH MADE ME ABLE TO FAMILIARIZE WITH THE EFFECTIVENESS OF
TRACKING SHOTS, CRABBING, OVER THE SHOULDER SHOTS AND ESTABLISHING
SHOTS ESPECIALLY WHICH EVIDENTLY BECAME USEFUL IN THE PRODUCTION OF OUR
FILM OPENING
5. PLANNING• IN ORDER TO HAVE AN ORGANIZED VERSION OF THE ORDER OF OUR FILM WE CREATED A STORYBOARD WHICH GAVE US
SOMETHING OR REFER TO WHEN IT CAME TO FILMING AND ALLOW IT TO BE ALTERED IN ORDER TO IMPROVE ON POINTS
LEADING TO THE FINAL STORYLINE.
• IN ADDITION WE ALSO PRODUCED; SHOT LISTS AND CALL SHEETS WHICH ALLOWED US TO MAKE SURE WE HAD A DIVERSE
RANGE OF SHOTS AND REMEMBER TO INCLUDE ALL OF THEM WHEN FILMING. ALL OF THESE ELEMENTS DEVELOPED MY
PRODUCTION SKILLS AS THESE ARE STEPS IN WHICH EVERY PRODUCTION COMPANY WOULD UNDERGO AND PLAN PRIOR
TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FILM. I BECAME MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE ON HOW TO CURATE A SCRIPT AS THIS HAS TO
BE MADE PRIOR TO THE HOT SEATING WHICH HELPED US TO UNDERSTAND THE CHARACTER OF BLAKE EVEN BETTER
• THE CALL SHEET INFORMED OUR ACTORS AND TEAM WHERE AND WHEN THEY WOULD BE NEEDED AND KEPT OUR TEAM
ORGANIZED BY LISTING THE VARIOUS PROPS AND EQUIPMENT WE NEEDED TO BRING, WE ALSO INCLUDED A RISK
ASSESSMENT WHICH EVALUATED THE VARIOUS RISKS OUR FILM WOULD POSE TO OUR ACTORS AND PRODUCTION TEAM
THAT WE WOULD NEED TO AVOID.
6. CONSTRUCTION
• THE CONSTRUCTION PHASE OF OUR FILM PROVED TO BE MORE CHALLENGING ELEMENT TO CREATE OUR FILM OPENING.
• THANKS TO PREVIOUS RESEARCH, I HAD BECOME VERY FAMILIAR WITH EDITING WHICH INCLUDED SOUNDTRACK AND SOUND
EFFECTS, TOGETHER WITH USING DIFFERENT CAMERA SHOTS AND ANGLES TO CREATE A SUSPENSEFUL, DRAMATIC ATMOSPHERE IN
OUR FILM OPENING ‘INFAMOUS’.
• FOR EXAMPLE AT THE END OF OUR FILM WE INCLUDED A SUSPENSEFUL PHONE CALL BY USING A DOLLY ZOOM, BY SLOWLY ZOOMING
INTO THE PHONE PLAYING A THREATENING VOICEMAIL FROM A MAN RELATE TO BLAKE; WHILE BLAKE IS BLISSFULLY UNAWARE OF
THE THREAT AS SHE HEADS TO THE AIRPORT.
• WE DECIDED TO CHOOSE MORE SUBTLE, WARM LIGHTING IN THE FIRST TWO SCENES; THE BEDTIME STORY AND THE NEWS REPORT.
HOWEVER, THIS CONTRASTS WITH THE BRIGHT, HARSH LIGHTING USED IN THE PAPARAZZI SCENE AS IF TO EMPHASIZE THE ASPECT
OF HER GETTING EXPOSED BY THE CAMERA FLASHING AND THERE IS NO WHERE FOR HER TO HIDE IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. WE USED A
SERIES OF MULTIPLE ANGLES INCLUDING TRACKING SHOTS AND CLOSE UPS OF OUR PROTAGONIST EDITED TOGETHER IN SHORT
LENGTHS TO CONVEY A SENSE OF STRESS AND CHAOS. THIS WAS PAIRED WITH A SOUNDTRACK OF A HEART BEAT THAT SOUNDED
IN THE BACKGROUND TO INCREASE THE TENSION AND CONVEY THE SHEER STRESS THIS INFLICTS ON BLAKE.
7. CONSTRUCTION
• THE FILMING PROCESS CAUSED ME TO BECOME MORE FAMILIAR WITH THE CANON
CAMERA AND BUBBLING A TRIPOD TO ACHIEVE THE RIGHT POSITION, I DID ALSO USE AN
IPHONE ON AN OCCASION TO SHOOT SHORT SCENES SUCH AS THE NEWS REPORT SCENE
BECAUSE THE IPHONE WAS USEFUL FOR HANDHELD CAMERAWORK IN ORDER TO MOVE
MORE FREELY IN SOME SHOTS AND IMMERSE THE AUDIENCE IN THE SCENE.
• ALSO, AS PART OF THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE GOOD
PRACTICE TO CREATE OUR VERY OWN FILM POSTER, LIKE A REAL FILM. IT ALSO ENHANCED
MY FAMILIARITY WITH PHOTO SHOP, I CAME UP WITH THE IDEA TO USE A CAMERA
FLASHING BACKGROUND AND I TOOK THE PHOTO USED OF OUR PROTAGONIST, BLAKE.
8. EDITING
• THE EDITING PROCESS WAS THE MOST EXCITING AS THIS WAS THE STAGE WHERE WE REALLY SAW OUR FILM OPENING COME TOGETHER. WE SEEMED TO FAVOR
FINAL CUT PRO OVER OTHER EDITING PLATFORMS SUCH AS IMOVIE BECAUSE IT PROVIDED MORE ADVANCED SOFTWARE
• I LEARNT HOW TO ADJUST THE LEVELS OF BOTH DIEGETIC AND NON-DIEGETIC SOUND IN ORDER TO REMOVE ANY UNWANTED BACKGROUND NOISE WHICH WAS
NEITHER WANTED OR NEEDED. ALSO, WE CONDUCTED EXTENSIVE RESEARCH IN ORDER TO FIND SUITABLE MUSIC AND SOUND EFFECTS FOR EACH SCENE, SUCH AS
THE SELECTION OF THE LULLABY SONG IN THE FIRST SCENE. ALSO, THE DECISION TO KEEP IN THE NON DIEGETIC SOUND OF THE MAGAZINES SLAMMING DOWN ON
THE SURFACES IN ORDER TO CONVEY A SENSE OF CONTROVERSY AND RAWNESS.
• ALSO, WE WERE ABLE TO OVERLAP AND SLIGHTLY MUFFLE THE SOUNDS OF THE PAPARAZZI SHOUTING THINGS SUCH AS ‘OVER HERE BLAKE!’ IN ORDER TO FURTHER
PORTRAY A CHAOTIC ATMOSPHERE AND BLAKE FEELING HEAVILY OVERWHELMED. THE THREATENING TONE OF VOICES ALSO HEIGHTENED THE SENSE OF DANGER
FOR BLAKE.
• IN THE FINAL SCENE, WE USED A REALISTIC IPHONE VOICEMAIL NOISE AND PHONE CALL ENDING SOUND EFFECT IN ORDER TO CONVEY A CONVINCING, REAL PHONE
CALL ALONG WITH THE SOUNDTRACK
• USING FINAL CUT PRO IN THE CONSTRUCTION PHASE REALLY MADE ME REALIZE HOW MUCH MY EDITING SKILLS HAD DEVELOPED AS THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT
INCREASE IN HOW MUCH I KNEW IN THE CONSTRUCTION PHASE IN COMPARISON TO THE PRELIMINARY EXERCISES WHERE I PREFERRED TO USE IMOVIE WHICH
HAS SIMPLER EFFECTS ETC.
9. CONCLUSION
• OVERALL, I CAME TO NOTICE THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS OF THE CURATION OF THIS FILM OPENING MY
PRODUCTION SKILLS HAD DEVELOPED SIGNIFICANTLY. WHEN I LOOK BACK AT MY PRELIMINARY EXERCISES,
THERE HAS BEEN A NOTICEABLE IMPROVEMENT IN EDITING AS WELL AS FILMING, AND I HAVE NOW GOT A
BETTER KNOWLEDGE OF THE RESEARCHING AND PLANNING PHASES, AS WELL AS OF GENRE AND AUDIENCE AND
HOW TO APPEAL TO THEM. ALSO, I FEEL THAT I KNOW MORE ABOUT DIFFERENT CAMERA ANGLES AND
TECHNIQUES AND HOW TO INCORPORATE THEM INTO A FILM SUCCESSFULLY.
• I BELIEVE THAT THE FINAL FILM OPENING WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL AND I AM PLEASED WITH THE OUTCOME - I
DO NOT BELIEVE THE OUTCOME WOULD HAVE BEEN AS GOOD WITHOUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF MY TEAMS
PRODUCTION SKILLS THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT.
