Editor's Notes

  1. Many schools are seeing the educational benefits of blogging. Teachers are mainly creating subject specific blogs or blogs documenting a particular project. The aim is usually to provide a more collaborative, reflective and interesting learning experience and to share the students’ learning with others, e.g. other classes or parents.
  2. This video gives a good introduction to blogs and how they can be used.
  3. Click on the ‘Eircom Junior Spiders’ image to go to the list of winners for 2013. The students could explore these if time allows. Clontuskert NS and St. Mologa’s NS won awards in previous years for their blogs. Use these to introduce the students to the type of content that can be added to a blog.
  4. Go to Blogger.com. Sign in with gmail account (their student emails should be ok for this) or create one using the red “sign up” button.
  5. Click on the Blogger Profile option on the right hand side.
  6. Enter a display name, e.g. mchalea or Emily123. Please note that this is not the name of the blog.
  7. Click on New Blog to create your first blog.
  8. Enter a Blog title for your blog. Select a url for the blog - check for availability. Choose template for the Blog. It is a good idea to start with the ‘Simple’ design for the moment and it can be changed later. By default, the ‘Dynamic Views’ template is selected so you actually need to click on the ‘Simple’ template. (The ‘Simple’ design is the design used in all the screenshots in this PowerPoint.)   Select create Blog!
  9. Your blog is created. Click the start blogging button.
  10. The aim of this introduction to blogging is to demonstrate some of the features that are common across all platforms. These are: Creating a post Inserting a image/video Creating a Page Dealing with comments Changing the look Creating a post Give the post a good title, type into the white space, edit the text and click Publish.
  11. Uploading an image:   When you are creating a new post, click on the image icon next to the word Link.   Browse to the location of the image. Click ‘Add Selected’.   Before you publish the post (which includes the image), you can change the size of the image and where you want the image to be located in your post by clicking on it (see third image on this slide).   Click publish when ready to post.
  12. Click ‘View Blog’ to see how the blog will look to the public.
  13. Embedding a video: Click Design in top right hand corner if viewing the blog. Click New Post.
  14. Meanwhile, go to YouTube. Find the video that you want. Click Share > Embed and copy the code.   Go back to your new post. Change the mode from Compose to HTML. Paste the code into the white space.
  15. -
  16. Explain the different options about storing documents online for embedding (and linking) purposes. Box and Scribd allow most file types but Slideshare is more limited. Students may also be familiar with Google Drive, Skydrive and Drop Box.
  17. Click Design to go back to edit the blog.
  18. Here you can change the ‘design’ of your Blog: how it looks and functions.
  19. To add a static page, click on pages > new page > blank page. Name your page and input content. Click Publish.
  20. Click on Show Pages as… to change how these pages appear, e.g. tabs along the top of your blog, down along the side or invisible.   Make sure to click on ‘Save Arrangement’ to save the changes that you have made.
  21. Note: Gadgets can be accessed under ‘Layout’ down along the left hand side.
