9. Recruitthe Best An Energy Innovation Engine One superstar at a time, if necessary
10. What is a Superstar? Humble - doesn’t act like a superstar Team player – does this person appreciate what others bring to the party? Do they do what is first and best for the mission and team? Community Minded – are they about service to others, inside and outside? Responsible – do they blame others or take the hit, and drive things forward? Self awareness – do they know themselves? Selflessness – Can they change to be more effective? Are they coachable? Willing? Intense Curiosity – is there a drive and passion to do what has not been done before?

Editor's Notes
Our INDVIDUAL success (which we know) vs. TEAM success (which we don’t know)The greater opportunity is to see that we’re competing against the rest of the world. It’s Hawaii vs. California. Hawaii vs. China. Hawaii vs. India. The competition is not within Hawaii – the University vs. Industry, etc…
First Hydrogen StateFirst Fusion StateFirst OTEC StateFirst Renewable Energy StateFirst ???
For the University – do radical game changing basic research…fusion energy, high energy physics, bioenergy, nuclear, solar, geothermal, wind…what inexpensive nanomaterials could be created to boost the energy output of fossil fuels while reducing carbon emissions, and at the same time help my car to run smoother…a kind of virtual tune up by filling up my gas tank. For Industry – a similar approach would be to do a radical game changing approach but for commercialization…essentially, get in our canoes and head out to find the customer with big pains and big budgets!
We usually talk about ‘what’ do we want to do or where do we have a competitive advantage…but my experience has been that if you map things out on paper there will always be someone in the world who is bigger, badder, and faster than you. So do we just do nothing. Of course not…but part of the solution, at least one way to move forward, is to let the discovery or creation of a ‘who’ drive the ‘what’ or the direction you take. Having a who always beats out a great what (a plan) that has no one to implement it. A who with a plan is what give you a unique competitive advantage.
Recruit back doesn’t mean they have to be local…they can be local in spirit and if they love Hawaii that’s great….it’s critical for hawaii to achieve a critical mass of talented people, and it’s not possible for them to be all locals…but they can be local in their heart.Where do you find these superstars? Go ask other superstars…and hang around with some. I actually found the last two while doing community service projects….We’re talking to one guy who is not local but he fits…
Preaching to the choir: Look everywhere for all different colors and types of money…from city, county, state, federal, corporate, other gov’t money, and private equity. The list goes on and one but the main point is to have a diverse portfolio of funding sources…. Write 5 to 10 proposal to win one. Finding a customer who is willing to put some skin in the game (cost share) for early stage technology (TRL 3 (active R&D initiated) up to 4 (breadboard in the lab) MSG: The State of Hawaii should create ‘jumping the valley of death’ funding sources to achieve various affects like commercialization (State FoF for Energy)
Letting go ofThinking big – we can’t do nuclear or fusion in hawaiiIndustry and UH doesn’t want to work togetherWe can survive on our own or we do it alone
