This document describes efforts at Holtz Children's Hospital to reduce central line infections. The pediatric ICU was initially unable to reduce its infection rate of 9.1 per 1000 line days. It implemented a central line bundle from IHI, focusing on hand hygiene and using chlorhexidine swabs to clean catheter hubs. This reduced the infection rate. When ethanol swabs replaced the chlorhexidine swabs temporarily, the rate rose again. Permanently using chlorhexidine swabs maintained the lower rate. The transplant unit also reduced infections using these techniques.
