This is my presentation on my analysis on music magazines for research on music magazine. In this presentation I look at three different magazines along with three different genres from each.
The document discusses the layout and design elements of magazine covers. It describes the common features seen on covers such as the masthead, mode of address featuring the main artist or story, primary cover lines previewing the main story, and additional side stories. Color schemes are used to convey the tone and genre of stories. Barcodes and collectible stickers are also discussed as purchasing and retention tools.
This cover is from Q magazine and features Dave Grohl, the lead singer of Foo Fighters, in the center. The Q logo is in the top left along with information about stories inside. Red, white, black and dark green are the main colors used to make key information like the artist's name stand out against the white background. The cover uses design techniques like differing font sizes and a free offer circle to attract and guide the reader's attention.
This document provides an overview of humor and comedy in Bulgarian culture. It discusses how Bulgarians enjoy laughing and joking, even making laughter noises in class. Popular jokes target politicians and their decisions, as well as stereotypes about people from Gabrovo being overly thrifty. Folklore features comic tricksters like Nastradin Hodja, while literature includes greedy characters like Bai Ganyo. Overall the document examines the role and subjects of humor in Bulgarian society.
Keep Calm and Carry On was a British government motivational poster created in 1939 at the start of World War 2, though it was never used. The poster showed people maintaining normal activities and keeping a calm attitude during wartime. Typography and visual elements in album artwork can convey meanings, like fonts representing fame or colors symbolizing royalty when paired with performance venues. Intertextuality and conventions provide relationships between images and words.
Chick lit is a genre of women's fiction that focuses on the lives of young, urban women between their twenties and thirties. It deals with themes of relationships, dating, careers and women's issues in a lighthearted way. Popular chick lit novels follow the stories of independent, single women navigating modern life challenges around balancing careers, personal lives and romantic relationships. The genre sells well and features strong female protagonists.
EarlyHood is a 21-year old rapper who released his debut album "Harold" in 2009 and one mixtape in 2015 called "i don't like s**t, I don't like to go outside" which was filled with feelings of isolation and depression. His newest single "succour" stands out from his previous work due to its raw portrayal of his previous depressed state and confession about trying to end his life because of it. Unlike many artists, Early seems to actually resolve the problems he writes about and continues writing about new challenges. He is always prepared to answer questions about his past despair, relationships with family, and drug use honestly without shutting down questions.
The document provides an analysis and deconstruction of advertisements for three different music acts:
1) The Wombats - The ad features a beach theme and bright colors that connote fun and youth. It promotes the band's album and upcoming tour dates.
2) Foals - The ad has a psychedelic color scheme and doodles that suggest darker meanings in the band's music than initially assumed. It promotes the new single "Cassius."
3) Bombay Bicycle Club - The vintage-style ad features casual photos of the band members. It promotes both an electronic and acoustic set while noting when tickets go on sale.
Zdrava Kamenova is a talented Bulgarian playwright born in 1979. Her play "Deviations" explores the lives of four young people struggling with love and identity. Each character tries to understand their desires but can only express themselves through media cliches. By identifying with unrealistic screen personalities, the characters are unable to face reality and remain alone, merely consuming illusions rather than living authentic lives. The play illustrates the difficulty of being honest with oneself and others in today's media-manipulated world.

The document summarizes key aspects of a magazine cover featuring Lady Gaga:
1) The Lady Gaga image obscures the magazine masthead, though it is still recognizable, and a tagline draws attention as it is positioned above in a bold, spaced out format.
2) The audience would include both adult men attracted to the nude image, and Lady Gaga fans of both sexes given her iconic status. The target age is generally 20+.
3) The primary cover line "Lady Gaga Tells All" lures readers interested in celebrity perspectives and secrets about her life.
This document analyzes magazine covers and layouts from Kerrang! and NME magazines. Kerrang! uses bright colors and imagery on its covers to attract attention and symbolize themes related to the featured music. NME emphasizes consistency in its house style and uses fewer images to appeal to an older, more intellectual audience. Both magazines employ font styles, colors, and visual elements that correlate with their content and targeted demographics.
Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?raheemgray
The document discusses how the media product represents various social groups using the acronym C.R.A.G.S (Class, Race, Age, Gender, Sexuality). It summarizes that the production is targeted towards the working class aged 16-25. It represents black people and those living in inner London may take interest due to the African and Jamaican culture. Gender roles portrayed could be seen as traditional with the father portrayed as the head of the household. The production takes a heterosexual approach with feminine female and masculine male characters.
The document discusses how the media product represents particular social groups through research and analysis of horror film opening sequences. It was decided that the protagonists would be two teenage girls of different ethnic backgrounds (one English, one African-Caribbean) to appeal to the female demographic that most frequently attends cinema. Elements like the tent, camping setting, and iPhone usage were included to relate to and depict the fears and behaviors of teenage audiences. Representing teenagers as vulnerable through lighting, sound, and a brief conversation about a boy aims to tension female viewers and relate to their experiences.
The document discusses how a media product represents its target audience of working class teenagers. It does so through the characters' use of simple terminology and South London accents in the script. The two female protagonists are dressed in casual clothes like jeans and leather jackets typically worn by working class teens. They are also aged 16-17 to be more relatable. While targeting all races, the lead characters are Afro-Caribbean to challenge the typical Caucasian protagonist and better represent the target audience.
This document discusses a parody advertisement for a garden shovel. It references the television show Desperate Housewives and plays on the slogan of a famous salami advertiser named Don from the 1960s known for saying "Is Don. Is Good.". The parody ad takes the opposite approach, saying "Not SCHOP. Not Good." to distance the garden shovel brand from the concepts of success and attractiveness associated with the original slogan. It aims to use humor and pop culture references to relate to audiences and differentiate the product in the marketplace.
The document discusses various trivia questions related to movies, music, sports and more. It includes questions about the origin of the term "Streisand effect", the space program that ended with the death of the "lady in blue", performers who meet physical and personality requirements to be part of a particular group and more. The summaries provide high-level context without directly answering the questions.
This document analyzes the cover of the Muse album "Resistance" to help inspire the design of the author's own digital packaging cover for a song. The Muse cover features angular shapes and bright colors similar to Picasso's style. It also depicts the Earth at the center surrounded by shapes that outline a speaker. These visuals relate to themes of resistance and music. The unconventional text placement and references to "The Wizard of Oz" make the cover unique and eye-catching.
MIKA // The Boy Who Knew Too Much Advert Analysiselleahmedia
The document analyzes an advertisement for Mika's new album. It summarizes the key elements of the ad, including the prominent artist name and album title, colorful graphics depicting household objects being sucked into a black hole, and how the wild imagery ties into Mika's brand and likely targets adults seeking escapism from responsibilities.
Collaboration project set design written partmartaepomba
This document outlines Marta Epomba's role as set designer for a production of the play Bus Stop by William Inge. The play takes place in a diner in Kansas City in March 1955 during a snowstorm. Characters are trapped in the diner and form romantic connections while waiting for the weather to clear. As set designer, Marta plans to convey the instability and desperation of the characters through a small, confined diner setting that emphasizes the angst of their interactions. The set will reflect the 1950s time period and feature wood finishes and accents to create a worn, rustic atmosphere.
The video will feature a shot of a girl walking alone through trees on the front cover to convey a lonely, dark indie feel. The back cover will show a couple holding hands but the girl clinging tightly while the boy is unresponsive, representing the theme of lost interest in the relationship.
Costumes aim to portray a dark, solitary style - the actress will wear warm layers alone outdoors but look plain with her boyfriend to later emphasize makeup when alone, dressing in black lace while playing piano to mourn the relationship.
Filming will take place in four locations - a park, beach, piano room with shutters, and house where the girl stares out a window at her disappearing boyfriend, seen through the camera on
The document analyzes scenes from Lady Gaga and Beyonce's "Telephone" music video through a postmodern lens. It discusses how the bold comic-book style title cards, Lady Gaga's unusual sunglasses and chains outfit, a scene depicting two females kissing, and poses of women in underwear reinvent identities and challenge social norms, reflecting postmodern ideals of blurring distinctions and reinventing conventions through art.
Analysis of Motionless In White - Infamous album coverHCochrane11
The document analyzes the special edition album cover of Motionless in White's 2012 album "Infamous". The cover shows lead singer Chris Motionless looking into a smashed mirror, connecting to a music video theory about references to looking. However, it also contradicts the theory that this relates to star vanity as the smashed mirror suggests he does not like what he sees. Key elements are the word "INFAMOUS" scratched across the mirror in red, representing blood and importance. Motionless also holds a raven, a gothic symbol linked to Edgar Allen Poe's poem "The Raven" and representing darkness. The inside obscures the faces of other band members, continuing the theme of the front cover where
This summary provides an overview of the "Aftertaste" exhibition at the Wall Gallery in Berlin, which explores themes of sensuality, consumption and transformation through the works of four artists. Matthew Rose adds surreal twists to 1950s advertisements. Sunna Wathen and Lisa Salamandra extend the meaning of bread beyond consumption through installations of bread remnants. Nancy Jones' cartoon-like images depict women in vulnerable poses but render the images ambiguous, leaving the viewer with an unclear payoff and bitter aftertaste.
The song "99 Red Balloons" was originally written in German by Nena in 1983 and later translated to English in 1984, losing some of the original message and meaning. The English version depicts a single detection being mistaken for a nuclear threat and triggering an all-out nuclear strike, when in reality the threat was just a bunch of balloons. The song concludes with the image of a lone girl in a destroyed and abandoned city, with only a red balloon floating above to represent what was once there.

The document analyzes the use of figurative language in the songs "Road to the Riches" by Kool G. Rap and "9 to 5" by Dolly Parton. It discusses how both artists employ metaphors, similes, idioms, assonance, hyperbole, personification and symbolism to add depth and meaning to their lyrics. For example, in "Road to the Riches" Kool G. Rap uses a metaphor to describe his plan to earn money and compares bottles of crack to "suicide". Dolly Parton's song contains idioms like "pour myself a cup of ambition" and personifies validation as something that can drive you crazy. The document concludes that both artists

Young women ages 15-19 are represented in the magazine. One story portrays them negatively by depicting stereotypical wild behavior when intoxicated. Another story suggests they are two-faced and bitchy. This challenges the dominant view of girls as sweet and innocent. The colors red, grey, and white were chosen as they are girly and will attract girls, with the bright red cover standing out. The magazine represents indie social groups through a festival page and natural photo styles not common in other music magazines.
Digipacks are a type of CD packaging made from heavy paper or cardboard. They open like a book with three sections - one for each side that opens to the left and right, and the center holding the CD. Digipacks were created by MeadWestvaco but became a generic term for this soft packaging style. Bands like using them for their design flexibility and aesthetic appeal.

Throughout the packaging, a consistent black, red, and white color scheme and hand-drawn doodles create continuity and a personal touch. Multiple versions were released with different bonus tracks to encourage collecting. The packaging aims to present the band and their music as fun and appealing to their target demographic of adolescents and young adults.

Brand New's The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me has unconventional artwork not clearly relating to the album title, possibly representing personal meanings to the band. Green Day's American Idiot takes influence
This document summarizes and analyzes the packaging and promotional materials for several music albums.
The first section examines digipaks for albums by Rihanna and Katy Perry. Both feature provocative images of the artists that may not be suitable for younger audiences, despite Perry appealing to wider demographics. Color schemes and imagery carry symbolic meanings that relate to the music.
The next section analyzes magazine advertisements. One for Stereophonics features a moody image reflecting their album's theme. Green Day's ad uses punk-inspired colors and imagery to promote their single from "American Idiot." Both ads effectively promote the artists and albums through consistent branding.

The digipack i have chosen to analyse is from the albumldevine1234
This digipack analysis summarizes the key design elements and narrative of the Imagine Dragons album "Night Vision":
1) The front cover features a figure staring into the distance surrounded by temple formations, with a purple glow and the band's name, conveying themes of contemplation and possible apocalyptic or religious meanings.
2) Imagery continues on the inside with cloud designs, keeping visual continuity.
3) The back lists the tracks in bold white font on a dark background, following standard conventions.
4) The CD features many tiny circles that may symbolize an endless void, representing the band's iconography. Font and styles are kept consistent throughout to unite the design.
The document summarizes how the audience was attracted and addressed in a magazine article. A large title and interesting photography on the cover drew people in. The model's skin was edited black and white with color remaining on his mask and shirt, creating an aesthetic that looked striking. References to music lyrics and symbols would be recognized by fans of hip-hop and indie music. The magazine assumed the audience was smart enough to understand these types of references.
The document analyzes and compares the album covers of three bands - Good Charlotte, Search The City, and Mayday Parade. For Good Charlotte's "Cardiology" album cover, the central heart image represents the connection between the songs, and the font styles maintain the band's recognizable logo. Search The City's cover depicts an empty, polluted city to reflect the album's theme of a massive fire. Mayday Parade features a recurring "umbrella man" character to create continuity across their albums and keep fans interested in solving the mystery of his identity.
The document discusses several CD album covers and posters. It describes the designs and styles of albums by artists like Josh Record, Childish Gambino, Gorillaz, MF Doom, and Justin Jones. The covers showcase a variety of visual approaches from simple photos to animated GIFs and comic-inspired drawings. Accompanying posters for Josh Record and Justin Jones utilize fonts, colors, and imagery tied to the artists' brands to promote their albums.
This music video proposal challenges negative stereotypes about men by showing a man experiencing and expressing a range of emotions after a breakup. The narrative follows the man through the five stages of grief and loss as he deals with the breakup. While various locations were initially considered, the story focuses on locations like the man's house, parks, and public transportation to depict his isolation and depression. The lyrics and scenes are synchronized to express the emotions and messages in the song.

Women are often portrayed unrealistically in media. They are shown as young, white, slim, and conforming to narrow beauty standards. Additionally, the "male gaze" structures much media around the perspective of heterosexual men, reducing women to sex objects. However, some argue that expressing beauty can be empowering. Facial expressions in media also differ by gender, with women often shown using expressions like "chocolate box", "invitational", and "super smile" while men are depicted as "carefree", "practical", or "seductive". In summary, media representation of women is frequently criticized for being unrealistic and objectifying but some believe emphasizing beauty can be empowering.
The document discusses the content and design of a music magazine. It begins by stating that the genre of rock and metal hybrid music has not changed. It then discusses the target audience as being mainly young adults aged 16-30. Several example content pages from other magazines are analyzed for design features that could be adopted. These include the use of colors, filters on photos, and simple layouts. The ideal content page design combines these elements, with a title, mode of address, side stories, quote and contents listing in a simple order.
