Covent Garden is a district in London known for its shops, street performers, and entertainment venues. It was originally a farmland called the Garden of the Convent that grew vegetables for nearby monks. In the 17th century, it became a popular area and the 4th Earl of Bedford developed the first public square in London there surrounded by luxury buildings. Today, Covent Garden remains a popular leisure destination with many shops, restaurants, pubs, and performance venues like the Royal Opera House.

3. Why is it called that?
 Because originally, the land where Covent Garden is
located was known as the Garden of the Convent, a
farmland where vegetables were harvested in order to
feed the monks of the nearby Convent of San Pedro.

4. What is it?
 Covent Garden is a district of London more touristy
and picturesque. It is known for its numerous outdoor
cafes, shops, stalls, markets and street artists that try
to make the walk to the pedestrians more pleasant.

 The area is dominated by shops, street performers and
various elements of entertainment and contains an
entrance to the Royal Opera House, which is usually
known as “Covent Garden”.
 The "Covent Garden Piazza" is located in the
geographical center and was the site of a market of
flowers, vegetables and fruits.

 In 1632 the 4th Earl of Bedford began to build here the
first modern public square in London, surrounding it
with luxury buildings for the wealthiest population.
 During the year of the Great Fire of London many
merchants who saw their businesses destroyed, moved
to Covent Garden, occupying almost the entire square.
In 1830 a building was built in the center to shelter a
market. Decades later the Flower Market was added.

 Nowadays and despite great changes suffered, Covent
Garden has become one of the most popular leisure
centers in London. It has a large number of shops,
most of them located along Floral Street. It also has
lively restaurants, pubs and bars where you can eat or
drink.
 Those interested in museums can find here the
Transport Museum in London, while theater fans are
in luck, since in Covent Garden you can also find the
London Theater Museum and the Royal Opera House
