Costa Rica has a long history dating back 10,000 years to early indigenous cultures. Christopher Columbus first encountered Costa Rica in 1502, though the Spanish showed little interest until Juan Vazquez de Coronado founded Cartago in 1562. Costa Rica gained independence in the 1800s along with other Latin American countries. In 1948, a civil war broke out between two political parties, leading to social reforms under the new president. Costa Rica is now highly biodiverse with 500,000 species and 25% of its land protected, and its people are generally well-educated and middle class who enjoy soccer, dancing, and Catholic traditions.
