• M.Sc from Mysore University – 1967 – Geology
• Ph.D from Mysore University – 1977 – Experimental Mineralogy
• D.Sc from Bordeaux University, France – 1981 – Solid State
o Chemistry
• For thirty years at the University of Mysore (1967- 2000), he served at
different levels, finally as Director of Mineralogical Institute, Professor and
Head, Department of Geology.
• Established the first High Pressure-Temperature Laboratory in 1976
with indigenously designed 4 kilo bar hydrothermal reactors, 10 kilo bar Gas
bomb and 40 kilo bar Piston Cylinder reaching up to 1100 C. His
contribution in phase equilibrium studies has gone into American books
(phase Diagrams for Ceramists) as standard diagrams.
• Published widely cited high-quality 60 research papers, two books in
Crystallography and Crystal Chemistry and guided 8 Doctoral candidates.

• Received the National Mineral Award from Government of India for
outstanding Research in Mineralogy
• Golden Jubilee Science & Technology Award of Mysore University
• Mineralogical Society Gold Medal for Research
• Padma Shri 2009 (third biggest civilian award in India)by president of

Technology, Japan, Bordeaux University, France, Edinburgh

OTHER LEAD ASSIGNMENTS
Vice-Chancellor of Kashmir University
He was invited to be the Vice Chancellor of Kashmir University (2001-
July 2004) by the then Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir,
Dr. Farooq Abdullah, and assigned the task of restoring the
Academics and Administration which had suffered during 20 years of
its Militancy. Within the first 6 months, he could restore the
Academic Calendar and other activities and streamline University
administration and at the end of three years, he got the University
'A' Grade from NAAC. He could win the hearts of people, cleanse
the university from unhealthy activities and brought an unprecedented
change. He started 11 new Departments, two P.G. Centres and
modernized laboratories and library. He was responsible to reopen the
University to the rest of India after 20 years. For one year he was
holding charge of two universities in Kashmir the other one being the
Sher-e-Kashmir Agriculture University. He has published his
memoirs of Kashmir “Fire Under the Snowflakes”.
SAARC Apex Body
As CEO of South Asia Foundation (Sept 2004 –Dec 2006), an apex
body of SAARC, he played a proactive role in promoting Regional
Cooperation through youth activity, Cultural Exchanges on Scholarships &
Youth Camps.
UGC
As member of University Grants Commission (UGC) July 2006-
July 2009, he served as an effective participant and signal contributor to all
policies and programs of the UGC, particularly as Chairman of Standing
Committee on Minorities.

As Vice-Chancellor in Pondicherry University, a Central University In a
span of five years, the university took a big leap forward showing an
unprecedented growth of 300% creating a record as India’s Fastest growing
central university during XI plan. Over 90 new programmes were started
with 22 new departments and six new Schools. At present
14 schools and 55 departments and Centres function at Pondicherry
University. The infrastructure, laboratory facilities, library, hostel
accommodation, sports and student support system now match world class
standards and surpasses the older JNU and Hyderabad Universities.. He
has increased the student intake by four times (1800 to 6500), faculty by two
times (180 to 460), and trebled the infra structure in less than 3 years by
adding over 150,000 sq mts of built space with state of the Art Laboratories
and Library.. The welfare measures such as free Transport, subsidized food
in hostels, free hostels to girls, free electric cars and bicycles in campus, free
use of sophisticated instruments, and free online journal access for 27,000
journals and free education to physically challenged are unprecedented
moves in the Indian Universities. Pondicherry University has emerged as
India’s most sought after university by students across the country with over
50,000 students writing the entrance test from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.
After 20 years with B grade of NAAC,the university obtained A grade by
NAAC

Taking into account the contribution as a scientist and to the cause
of quality higher education in the country, in different capacities ,as
Professor, as Vice Chancellor of Three Universities and a Member of the
University Grants Commission, the Government of India, recently, has
awarded the 'PADMA SHRI' in 2009 to him.

through his social activities
