Schneider Electric (Euronext: SU) is a French global company. It
was founded in 1836 by two brothers, Eugène I and Adolphe
Schneider.

4. In the first part of the 20th century, Schneider et Cie associated itself
with Westinghouse Systems, a major international electrical group at
the time. The group began manufacturing electric motors and
locomotives. After the Second World War, the armaments businesses
were abandoned in favor of electrical engineering, and iron and steel
works. The company remained in this sector until the early 1980s.
In 1981, Groupe Schneider was broken up, focusing on the electrical
and controls industry. This was followed by strategic acquisitions of
Telemecanique (1988), Square D (1991) and Merlin Gerin (1992) and
it is these brands that are the core products of the company's
offering.
In 1999, Groupe Schneider was renamed Schneider Electric. The
Schneider company also acquired The Lexel Group that year.
Today, the company has grown into a world leader [says who?] in Power
and Control solutions through further acquisitions: Power
Measurement in 2005, MGE UPS Systems, Clipsal, TAC, Nulec,
Andover Controls, GET plc and Citect in 2006, American Power
Conversion in 2007, and Gutor Electronic LLC in 2008.
Veris Industries, an electronic sensor manufacturer, was acquired in
1999. The newest acquisition for the company is Pelco, a video and
security system manufacturer[2] and the distribution branch of AREVA
T&D, a strategic and very successful acquisition made in 2010, while
the transaction for PELCO was closed on October 17, 2007.

6. History
1836, beginnings
In 1836 the brothers Eugène and Adolphe Schneider took over an
abandoned foundry at Le Creusot, which allowed them to participate
in the industrial revolution. The company's main focus was on the
steel industry, working on train tracks, ships and various other types
of heavy machinery.
1870-1944, first activities
Eugène's son, Henri Schneider, took the company to the next level
when he pushed it into the new production methods that were
appearing during the 1860s and the 1870s, making it possible to
make cheaper but stronger steel. With their innovative methods,
Schneider quickly became one of the European leaders in the
armament and heavy machinery industry. In the meantime, Eugène's
other son, Eugène II, was making transactions and investments in
several countries.
Most of the company's income came from the armament sector, but
after World War I the company started focusing more on the
development of electricity and steel as everyday products. It is also
during this time that Merlin Gerin, Telemecanique and Square D
started prospering. After World War I Schneider adopted an
expansion strategy, going into Germany and East Europe. This
strategy was put on hold when WWII started.

7. 1944-1981, changes and difficulties
After the Liberation of France, Schneider was forced to face a new
crisis. The group's new chief, Charles Schneider, progressively
abandoned the armament industry in favor of civilian sectors. The
company completely changed in 1949, adapting itself to the
challenges brought by the post-war world.
Charles Schneider's violent death during August 1960 brought up a
succession problem. The company was also suffering in its key
sectors. Baron Edouard-Jean Empain took control of the group in
1969. He unsuccessfully tried to diversify the groups traditional main
sectors. Eventually, alliances started developing with other
companies
1981-2000, from Schneider to Schneider Electric
In 1981, Didier Pineau-Valencienne changed the company's
structure, completely eliminating the sectors that were in crisis, such
as iron, steel and marine construction.
After getting the company financially on its feet, thanks to new
investors and changes in the company's structure, Schneider started
an expansion period at the end of the 1980s. After having absorbed
much of Merlin Gerin (1986), Pineau-Valencienne started buying
companies such as Télémecanique (1988) and Square D (1991).

8. In May 1999, under the leadership of its new CEO, Henri Lachmann,
Group Schneider changed its name to Schneider Electric, marking its
principal objective in the electrical field.
2000-today, growth
Schneider Electric's strategy involves growth internally and externally,
developing its geographical positions. Henri Lachmann retired in
2007 to be replaced by Jean-Pascal Tricoire, who is the current
Chairman and CEO of the company.
In October 2008, the company's Canadian division, Schneider
Electric PMC Victoria, was named one of BC's Top Employers by
Mediacorp Canada Inc., which was announced by The Vancouver
Sun, The Province and the Victoria Times-Colonist.[4]

> French environmental summit
In 2007, France organised a national environmental summit that
brought together all stakeholders to address today’s environmental
challenges. Schneider Electric was involved in discussions on
promoting energy efficiency.
> Global Compact
Launched in 1999 by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the Global
Compact brings companies and non-governmental organisations
together under the aegis of the United Nations to "unite the power
of market with the authority of universal ideals". Schneider
Electric publicly expressed its support for universal values by joining
the Compact in December 2002. The Group has primarily worked to
share this commitment with its partners since 2003.

Schneider Electric also takes part in the work of the Observatoire
Social International (OSI). It has signed on to the “right to lifelong
education and training”, which aims to develop a relationship of
partnership and co-responsibility between companies and educators
and trainers.

Schneider Electric uses the World Health Organisation’s definition of
health in defining its policies ("Health is a state of complete physical,
mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease

Standards organizations
Schneider Electric plays an active role within AFNOR, the French
standards organisation. In particular, it participates in the working
group on sustainable development. The Group also works with
international standards organisations in developing the standards that
apply to its products:

Reaffirming our commitment to the very special industry that we

emission levels.

Our BIPBOP programme
Having understood the global as well as Indian challenges, we have
embarked on a path which we call BIPBOP - an acronym for
‘Business, Investment and People at the Bottom of the Pyramid’.
The BIPBOP programme covers three dimensions Business -
develop and deliver solutions, particularly in renewable energies and
new lighting technology (solar PV, LED, etc.) to provide affordable
and clean energy; Investment - provide funding to innovative
electrical companies, SMEs and entrepreneurs, to contribute to the
success of local businesses;
People - support people from the bottom of the pyramid to acquire
electrical competencies and develop their ability to work, through
training. Our approach towards CSR is unlike traditional form of
philanthropy. In fact, through our efforts we want to build capacity at

49. the grass root level and make the change self sufficient and
sustainable. With BIPBOP, we hope to provide access to safe and
clean energy to people who are deprived of it and need the most. We
do not intend to carry forward BIPBOP in isolation, hence are
engaging with other important stakeholders in the society like
government, international organisations and NGOs to propel this idea
to convert into reality. The BIPBOP programme addresses two key
issues in providing sustainable access to electricity: Lack of
appropriate equipment through the development of an adequate offer
and; Skills and expertise shortage through technical and business
training In our research, we found that affordability for initial
investment is the major barrier for access to electricity at the BOP.
And, each household at BOP spends 2-4 USD per month on
kerosene for lighting. The chart below maps out the prevailing
situation and issues with people at the BOP.
Keeping these hurdles in mind, we are aiming in bringing access to
energy at BOP in sustainable, comprehensive and scalable way.

energy replicating the model from house to house and village to
village With BIPBOP programme, we have set out to achieve a target
of providing access to energy to more than 4lac households and
change lives of many more in next 3 years.
We strongly believe, any amount of charitable activity cannot alleviate
poverty at bottom of pyramid. If CSR objective of a company is
aligned to their business goals, it will help in value creation at BOP
thus alleviating poverty.
By promoting the concept of entrepreneurship and technical training
we intend to create a pool of electricians who will promote safe and
reliable electric installation in India. This will also help young
unemployed youth from poor family to get a job and support their
families. Presently Schneider Electric India Foundation is providing
free electrician training to unemployed youth from poor families in 8
training centres across 5 states. So far we have provided training to
200 unemployed youth.

India, Turkey, Russia, Chile, Egypt, Colombia, Indonesia, France,

The health policy, defined and deployed at the Group level in 2006,
applies the definition of the WHO: "health is a state of complete
physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of
disease or infirmity".
The Group considers health as a shared issue by the whole of the
collaborators and partners; it aims to become the reference for
health in each 106 countries where the company is present and
to become one of the best in class companies.

committed itself to promoting an ambitious project relating to respect
for health, combining responsibility and economic efficiency

The engaged policy aims at a radical change of the behaviors.
Several steps bring the proof of our engagement:
• The Health and Safety Steering Committee, including
representatives of the various entities of the Group and
managed by the Management of the Sustainable Development
Department, sets orientations, runs and coordinates the health
policy on a world level and ensures the coherence of the
carried out actions.
• The strong involvement of the managers for the implementation
to the action plans was accelarated by the integration of safety
criteria in their remuneration.
• The support of a "sponsor" , sometimes member of the
Executive Committee of Schneider Electric, appointed for "bad
performers" (units with the poorest safety performance)
facilitates the actions. The ten entities which took benefit from
the actions of sponsoring in 2006 (sites shared between
France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Australia, China, Brazil and
Argentina) progressed afterwards more quickly than the

individually by a sponsor.
• The training of the managers within the Schneider Electric
University includes economic efficiency modules of health and
safety at work.
• The exchanges of good practices on the Health issues also
contribute to the evolutions of behavior of the managers and
their teams. The promotion of the local initiatives is in particular
carried out thanks to the new corporate website of the health
community.
• The implementation of a management system of health: "an
international system to structure a local step", contributes to
improve, continuously, the effectiveness of health & safety at
work. The Group encourages its entities to obtain a
management system of health at the work in conformity with the
international standards (OHSAS 18001, ILO-OSH). Several
sites began in this step in 2006. All the entities Schneider
Electric must have set up a management system dedicated to
health and safety by the end of 2008.

54. The health policy is based on one main indicator : the number of days
lost after accidents which allows a monthly follow-up and a monitoring
of action plans. The objective is to reduce by 20% per year this

The context
1.6 billion people, or 300 million households, have no access to
electricity. They earn less than 2 dollars per day:

• 100 million live in Indonesia, and a similar number in
Bangladesh;
• 70 million live in Nigeria; More than 220 million live in Sub-
Saharan Africa.
These poor families spend more than 15 dollars per month on
energy.
The BipBop programme: Business, Innovation & People at the
Base of the Pyramid
Schneider Electric has developed a sustainable programme to bring
safe, clean electricity to the people who need it most worldwide.
With the strong willingness to involve local communities and local
stakeholders in each country, the BipBop programme addresses
three key issues to provide sustainable access to electricity:
• the lack of appropriate equipment through the development of
an adequate offer;
• the lack of financial resources available for innovative energy
entrepreneurs through funding;
• and the skills and expertise shortage through technical and
business training.

Schneider Electric Working Towards Energy Conservation
Schneider Electric unveiled five major
technological innovations at ELECRAMA 2010 in its power, energy
efficiency, ISC (installation systems and control), and industry
business. These include Masterpact MVS, Lexium 32, Sympholux,
Varplus range of LV Capacitors, and Compact CVS. As a global
specialist in energy management with operations in more than 100
countries, Schneider Electric offers integrated solutions across
multiple market segments, including leadership positions in energy
and infrastructure, industrial processes, building automation, and
data centres/networks, as well as a broad presence in residential
applications. The company clocked domestic sales of Rs 20 billion
and exports of Rs 20 billion in 2009. Mr Olivier Blum, Managing
Director, Schneider Electric India, spoke to Milton D'Silva, Editor,
Industrial Products Finder, during the event. Excerpts:

59. How is the Elecrama experience this year?
It is amazing to see such a large number of participants and visitors
with all the right ambience and enthusiasm all around. It is our
privilege to be associated to IEEMA to contribute to make Elecrama a
window for our industry. For the first time in India, we are presenting
Schneider Electric as a global specialist in Energy Management
integrating the full solutions coming from the acquisitions of Conzerv
Systems and Meher Capacitors, and several product launches.
So, you are now a complete energy management company?
If we take the life cycle approach of energy efficiency the square
comprises four quadrants: Measure, Fix, Automate and Monitor. Our
recent acquisitions have filled in the gaps in measurement and power
factor correction with the Conzerv Systems and Meher Capacitors
products respectively. In automation, we have strong products and
capabilities, as also for real time monitoring with software and web-
based technologies.
What is the 72 per cent energy conservation which Schneider
mentions in its literature?
The figure of 72 per cent refers to the total percentage of energy that
concerns us directly and hence can be worked up on for conservation
efforts, the other 28 per cent being used for transportation and hence
beyond our domain. So all our products and efforts are devoted to the
concept of energy optimisation and by extension, energy

60. conservation. Like the products we launched here are simplified and
will help end-user reduce design time, capex and opex, and most
importantly reduce wastage by making optimal use of energy.
How important is the Indian market?
India is part of the select group of 5 most important countries of
Schneider Electric. And, the range of products, solutions and services
launched here suggests our growing thrust on research and
development. Globally, an investment of nearly five per cent out of
the global turnover is made in R&D, out of which a significant part will
be spent in India. We intend to increase our market share in India by
quadrupling our sales turnover by 2013.
So we will witness more acquisitions?
We will grow organically and inorganically, so acquisitions will
happen. In fact, globally Schneider Electric has made over 100
acquisitions in the last six years, the most by any company. I have
personally been involved in many of these, in China and elsewhere.
About a fifth of my time is devoted to look for such opportunities,
study them thoroughly so that once we make the decision it is swift
and a perfect fit in our strategy.
What is the BiPBoP programme the company is launching in
India?
The BiPBoP - Business, Investment, People at the Bottom of the
Pyramid - is an endeavour to bring safe and clean electricity to the

61. people who need it the most. It is like a CSR initiative, but not charity,
since it is linked to our business. Under this programme, the company
will be involving local communities and stakeholders to address the
three key issues to provide sustainable access to electricity: lack of
appropriate equipment, lack of financial resources and shortage of
skills and expertise. Each of this will be addressed by appropriate
solutions like developing specific products for this segment,
reinvesting the profit made in the foundation to in turn provide
financial assistance and providing technical and business training to
the people in the target group.
You have worked in China before coming to India two years ago.
How different is the Indian experience?
Well, no two markets are alike and so it is not appropriate to
compare, but let me say that while China has had tremendous growth
in the last ten years and more, so is India growing very rapidly today.
The similarity is both are countries with a billion plus population and a
huge market with plenty of challenges and opportunities. The
difference is that in China the decision making is very fast and so is
project execution, which in India is not the case. On the other hand,
India is much more dynamic, and has the talent and capability. But
both are very challenging assignments.

65. The new system aims to illuminate the lives of 500 million Indians
having no access to electricity, with special focus on rural India. This
marks a major milestone for Schneider Electric’s global sustainable
program – BipBop.
In-Diya is a specially designed LED based lighting system that
provides backup ranging from 8 – 15 hours for indoor applications. In-
Diya LED based lighting system is available in nine different variants.
The basic model with 45 LEDs is available for EUR8.5 ($11.5
approx.). It is powered by an external chargeable battery which can
be rented from a battery charging station managed by a local
entrepreneur. The high-end variant is a 90 LED Solar Home Lighting
System which is compatible with the electrical grid and is priced at
EUR70 ($95 approx.).
In addition to using Schneider Electric’s strong network of 400 plus
channel partners, the Group will join hands with various Micro
Finance Institutions, NGOs and specially trained entrepreneurs to
reach the rural masses. Half of the net profit earned from sales of In-
Diya in India will be put back into the Schneider Electric India
Foundation to further the cause of BipBop.
Schneider Electric India Foundation is presently running 11 training
centers in six states viz. Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa,
Karnataka, Bihar and Delhi. Another 10 training centers will be
opened during 2010. Benefits of In-Diya include a 50% less power
than 11W CFL and 90% less power than 60 Watt incandescent lamp
for the same light output; it can be mounted on a wall and can

66. illuminate a room of 12 feet by 12 feet for all normal activities; in its
high-end version costs less than any CFL based solar home lighting
system; provides 50,000 hours of lighting.
The key drivers contributing to the improvement were the following:
- The strong rebound in volume added a positive effect of €192
million to profitability.
- Productivity and structural adaptation drove cost down by €343
million. Support function costs were reduced by €50 million, which
was the combined effect of continued cost-cutting in mature countries
and reinvestment in some selected new economies in light of the
strong rebound. Volume rebound and excellent control of fixed
manufacturing costs led to significant increase in industrial
productivity in the first half 2010, generating €293 million of savings
from purchasing, rebalancing and lean manufacturing. Cumulative
cost savings since the launch of the One program in 2009 reached €
1 billion, or 62% of the 3-year target.
- The first half result also benefited from positive currency impact of
€61 million partly attributable to transaction impact related to the
appreciation of the Australian dollar, Russian
ruble, and Brazilian real against the Euro.
The benefits of the above items were somewhat offset by the
following key impacts:
- Mix impact was -€26 million, substantially better than same period
last year.
- Pricing impact was close to neutral at -€19 million, in line with
expectations.

67. - Raw material headwind reduced profit by €35 million, while
production labor inflation was contained at €18 million. Support
function cost inflation and other costs (including global IT system
costs) were significant at €77 million, the increase was primarily in
new economies following the strong rebound in activity.
Lastly, acquisitions net of divestments had a positive €6 million
impact.
A non-recurring charge of €15 million related to the Areva
Distribution acquisition was included in the EBITA before
restructuring costs of €1,286 million, but was restated in the operating
figures mentioned here for better comparability.
By business, Power posted 2.1 point margin improvement over prior
year, at 19.7% of sales. Profitability of Industry jumped by 11.0 points
and reached 19.1% of sales, similar to Power. IT continued its margin
improvement, up 1.6 points, at 14.7% of sales. Volume rebound and
restructuring effort lifted CST margin up by 12.9 points, at 12.3% of
sales. However, profitability of Building was still affected by the on-
going downturn in construction and was down 1.2 points at 9.5% of
sales.
Certain functions reported at the businesses level in 2009 are now
part of the Group global shared services and were consequently
booked as corporate costs, in line with the new organization put in
place under the One company program. Therefore, the total
corporate costs in first half 2010 amounted to €238 million or 2.8% of
sales (excluding the non-recurring charge on Areva Distribution),
same as 2009 on comparable basis.
