This document provides the text of a sermon given at First Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi on August 25, 2019. The sermon discusses the concept of God's grace based on an analysis of Titus 3:1-11. It is divided into three parts: [1] Our Past Guilt, discussing what people were like before receiving God's grace, [2] God's Present Grace, focusing on God's love and the work of the Holy Spirit in saving people, and [3] Our Future Glory, about being heirs to eternal life. The sermon uses the story of Abraham's servant seeking a wife for Isaac as a metaphor for the Holy Spirit seeking a bride for Jesus. It emphasizes that salvation is only
1. The passage describes how sin separated humanity from communion with God, but that Jesus bridged the gulf through His merits.
2. It says Jesus is the appointed medium of communication between God and fallen humanity. Without Jesus, angels could not communicate with humans.
3. Jesus connects helpless humans to the source of God's infinite power. He makes spiritual communion possible once again.
The document discusses Jesus' authority as depicted in various passages from the book of Luke. It describes how Jesus had authority to interpret scripture, teach with authority, cast out demons, forgive sins, and have authority over death and nature. It then summarizes the key teachings and themes from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount as recorded in Luke, including the beatitudes, rewards in heaven, warnings, love for others, non-judgment of others, identifying true believers by their fruit, and the importance of embracing and living out God's message. The document concludes by discussing Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan and how it depicts Jesus' mission to save and help all people.
The document discusses the concept of a "bond servant" or slave in the Bible. It explains that in the Old Testament, a slave could voluntarily become a bond servant for life by declaring their love for their master, wife, and children. Their ear would then be pierced with an awl as a sign they were a slave for life. The document argues that this concept reflects how believers are bond servants of Christ, having given their lives to him completely. It stresses the importance of being humble and obedient like Jesus, who was the ultimate suffering servant and gave his life to fulfill God's will.
This document discusses how Jesus Christ is central to the Old Testament through various means:
1) Messianic prophecies that foretell Jesus' coming.
2) References to the "Angel of the Lord" who displays both physical and divine attributes, suggesting he is a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus.
3) The use of the Hebrew word "Son" to refer to the second person of the Trinity, showing Jesus' role throughout the Old Testament as God's representative.
1) Joseph is favored by his father Jacob and given a robe of many colors, making his brothers jealous.
2) Joseph has dreams that his brothers will bow down to him, further angering them.
3) When Jacob sends Joseph to check on his brothers, they conspire to kill him but instead throw him in a pit and sell him into slavery.
4) The brothers tell Jacob that Joseph was killed by an animal, causing Jacob great sorrow.
This sermon discusses Paul's letter to Titus in Titus 3:1-11. It summarizes the passage in three parts:
I. Our Past Guilt (Titus 3:3) - We were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to sin.
II. God's Present Grace (Titus 3:4-6) - God's kindness and love appeared through (a) the sovereign love of God, (b) the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit, and (c) the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ.
III. Our Future Glory (Titus 3:7) - We will one day receive our full inheritance in heaven and reign

It discusses how Joseph was favored by his father Jacob and given a robe of many colors, which made his brothers jealous. It describes Joseph's dreams that predicted his brothers would bow down to him, further angering them. When Jacob sends Joseph to check on his brothers, they conspire to kill him but ultimately throw him into a pit and later sell him into slavery. The document presents Joseph as a "type of Christ", highlighting parallels between Joseph's suffering at the hands of his brothers and Jesus' rejection by his own people.
The document discusses several factors that affect how the Bible is interpreted:
1. The Bible was written by humans in different times and cultures, so it reflects the ideas and language of its writers' eras.
2. The manuscripts were copied by hand over centuries, introducing mistakes and variants in the text. Translations also involve interpretive choices.
3. Readers approach the Bible through the lens of their own backgrounds, experiences, languages, and cultures. It is impossible to be completely objective when interpreting Scripture.

upon which every soul will be elected to eternal life—obedience to His commandments,
through faith in Christ. God has elected a character in harmony with His law, and anyone

“Now Dinah, the daugh-
ter Leah had borne to Jacob,
went out to visit the women of
the land. When Shechem son of
Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that
area, saw her, he took her and
raped her.”
“All the men who went out of the
city gate agreed with Hamor and his
son Shechem, and every male in the
city was circumcised. Three days
later, while all of them were still in
pain, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon
and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took
their swords and attacked the un-
suspecting city, killing every male.”
“Then God said to Jacob, ‘Go up
to Bethel.’”
“Now Deborah, Rebekah’s
nurse, died.”
“Rachel began to give birth
and had great difficulty.
. . . So Rachel died.”
“Now Israel loved
Joseph more
than any of his
other sons,
. . . and
he made an
ornate robe for him.
When his brothers saw that
their father loved him more than any
of them, they hated him and could not
speak a kind word to him.
“Joseph had a dream, and when he
told it to his brothers, they hated him
all the more.”
“So when Joseph came to his broth-
ers, they stripped him of his robe—the
ornate robe he was wearing—and they
took him and threw him into the cis-
tern.”
“Judah said to his brothers, ‘What will
we gain if we kill our brother and cover
up his blood? Come, let’s sell him to
the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands
on him; after all, he is our brother, our
own flesh and blood.’ His brothers
agreed.
“So when the Midianite merchants
came by, his brothers pulled Joseph
up out of the cistern and sold him for
twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmael-
ites, who took him to Egypt.”
“Then they got Joseph’s robe, slaugh-
tered a goat and dipped the robe in the
blood. They took the ornate robe back
to their father and said, ‘We found this.
Examine it to see whether it is your
son’s robe.’
“He recognized it and said, ‘It is my
son’s robe! Some ferocious animal has
devoured him. Joseph has surely been
torn to pieces.’”

“Wives, understand and support your husbands by submitting to them in
ways that honor the Master. Husbands, go all out in love for your wives.
Don’t take advantage of them. Children, do what your parents tell

too hard on your children or you’ll crush their spirits” (Colos-

“May the God who gives endurance and encourage-

“Jacob is a classic illus-
tration of a man who was
too busy for his family, too
preoccupied and uncon-
cerned, which meant he was
too passive to deal with what
was occurring in the lives of his
children.” —Charles Swindoll, current U.S. writer
