Old Ironsides 80th
Anniversary Prohibition Party
Cornerstone PR
Maleah Burch - CEO Sandra Harper - CIO

Old Ironsides was the first restaurant after prohibition to obtain a liquor license in
Sacramento County. The American Prohibition laws made it illegal to produce and
distribute alcohol. Now having been around for over 80 years and still a hot spot in
Sacramento for locals and live bands, they are ready to celebrate their past. In
celebration of 80 years of business and overcoming the struggles of the American
prohibition, Old Ironsides is hosting their very own prohibition party where they will
transport their guests back to a 1920s speakeasy.
Tickets will be sold for this event at $50 each and will include two drink vouchers,
$100 worth of chips for mock-gambling, appetizers and a buffet dinner. There are 120
tickets available for sale and 30 tickets will be given to local businesses and radio
stations to give away for promotion.
Old Ironsides will take the guests back to the 20s with era cocktails, appetizers,
and costumes. A costume contest will be held and the best-dressed guest will receive a
$100 cash prize. For entertainment there will be a jazz swing band as well as gambling
tables with play chips that will be provided for each guest to try their luck with. Prizes
such as gift cards, bottles of wine, and t-shirts will be able to be redeemed with the
guest’s winnings.
Doors will open at 7 p.m. where music will be playing, while gambling and
appetizers will be available to guests. Dinner will start at 8 p.m. and go until 10 p.m.
where guests are welcome to grab a plate and take a seat at cocktail tables set up
around the bar. The costume contest winner will be revealed at 11 p.m. and a cash
prize will be rewarded. The evening will conclude at Midnight.

4. History
At the close of prohibition in 1933, William Bordisso was issued the first liquor license in
Sacramento County. In 1934, he established the Old Ironsides here at Tenth and “S”
Streets. He fostered the relaxed neighborhood atmosphere that the Old Ironsides offers
to this day. About 82 years later, the Bordisso/Kanelos family continues this tradition of
serving good food and drinks in a friendly, family atmosphere.

16. Theory
Altercasting
History and Orientation
Although the term altercasting is used quite frequently, it is not a very well-known or
elaborated theory of persuasion.
Core Assumptions
When a person accepts a certain social role, a number of social pressures are
brought to bear to insure that the role is enacted. The social environment expects
the person to behave in a manner that is consistent with the role; the role also
provides the person with selective exposure to information consistent with the role.
Altercasting means that we ‘force’ an audience to accept a particular role that make
them behave in the way we want them to behave.
There are two basic forms of altercasting:
- Manded altercasting means that we ‘tell’ people who they are (or are
supposed to be) by making an existing role salient (‘You as a Christian
should....’), by placing others in a particular role (‘You as a young ambitious
person should ....’), by attributing a new identity or role to someone, or by
asking people to play a role.
- Tact altercasting means that we put ourselves as senders in a role that
‘evokes’ a natural counter-role for the other. Some common role sets are for
instance expert-unknowing public, fool - normal, helper - dependent,
scapegoat - sinners, etc.
Altercasting is a powerful tactic because:
- the social role is a basic unit in people’s everyday condition;
- presenting oneself in a social role that can be used to cast the alter (tact
altercasting) is relatively easy;
- constructing roles that trap others in a course of action is also relatively easy;
- people often accept easily the social roles offered to them.
