The Trinidad State baseball team
finished third in the regular sea-
son race for the Empire Conference
crown, but that did not stop the Tro-
jans from claiming their second Re-
gion IX title in as many years this
past weekend at the Region IX Tour-
nament in Lamar. The Trojans won
three games in three days to bring
home the trophy. They will now pre-
pare for the Western District Tour-
nament in Henderson, Nevada later
this week.
The regular season race was tight
all spring, coming down to a four-
way competition the final two weeks
of the season. Lamar ended up first
with a 26-10 record, followed by Otero
at 24-12, Trinidad at 21-15 and North-
eastern at 20-16. The top four teams
qualify for the tournament so it end-
ed up that Lamar would host North-
eastern and Otero faced the Trojans.
The tournament got underway
on Thursday with the hometown
Lopes getting the better of NJC 5-1 in
the opener. The Trojans then faced
the Rattlers in the nightcap. TSJC
jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on
a home run by Alex Dominguez.
Pitcher Alex Rogers kept Otero un-
der wraps early and the Trojans in-
creased the lead to 6-0. The rest of the

ASK-A-LAWYER DAY
Court’s successful
event returns Monday

The Third Judicial District
(encompassing Huerfano and Las
Animas counties) and their Ac-
cess to Justice
Committee will
host their sec-
ond Ask-a-Law-
yer Day event,
which is de-
signed to provide
residents with
free 20-minute le-
gal consultations
with local attor-
neys regarding
civil matters,
in Trinidad on
Monday, May 18.
The event will
run from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the
Las Animas County Courthouse at
200 East First Street. Reservations
are encouraged and can be made
by calling (719) 680-7333. Walk-ins
will be served on a first-come, first-
serve basis.
The first Ask-a-Lawyer event
in February was hugely success-
ful, according to Third Judicial
Court Judge Leslie Gerbracht
and District Problem Solving
Court Coordinator C.J. Montoya.
Filling the third floor of the Las
Animas County Courthouse, 36
people—mostly
local residents,
but some drove
from as far as
Pueblo—attend-
ed the last event.
Those people
ranged in age
from 20-60, rep-
resented a huge
swath of vary-
ing backgrounds
and said Judge
Gerbracht—no
one was turned
away—during
the three-hour session.
“We just want to serve as many
people as we can,” said Judge Ger-
bracht.
Montoya said, “The majority
of [the cases lawyers consulted on
at the last event] were domestic
relations cases involving custody,
divorce. That was about 60 per-
cent of what we had. The rest were
property, real estate cases, we had
some money cases, small claims,
civil stuff. A very few were [work-
man’s] comp related.”

Watch out for those swarming bees — they look kinda mad!County courthouse maintenance worker Ryan Walk, above left, with the huge bee swarm that appeared on the grounds of the
courthouse on Friday morning. Walk said the swarm wasn’t there on Thursday. Beekeeper Bob Lucas sprayed sugar water on a
bucket and its lid, then swept the bees into the bucket Friday afternoon. Lucas and his wife, Cathy,  are honey producers with mul-
tiple beehives, and will take the bees to a good home.

The Trojans won three games in three days to bring home the trophy. They will now pre- pare for the Western District Tour- nament in Henderson, Nevada later this week. The regular season race was tight all spring, coming down to a four- way competition the final two weeks of the season. Lamar ended up first with a 26-10 record, followed by Otero at 24-12, Trinidad at 21-15 and North- eastern at 20-16. The top four teams qualify for the tournament so it end- ed up that Lamar would host North- eastern and Otero faced the Trojans. The tournament got underway on Thursday with the hometown Lopes getting the better of NJC 5-1 in the opener. The Trojans then faced the Rattlers in the nightcap. TSJC jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on a home run by Alex Dominguez. Pitcher Alex Rogers kept Otero un- der wraps early and the Trojans in- creased the lead to 6-0. The rest of the Photo courtesy of David Barrack Josh Payne picked up the win against Otero in the Region IX Title game on Saturday in Lamar. Continued on Page 8 ... ASK-A-LAWYER DAY Court’s successful event returns Monday By Eric John Monson News Editor The Chronicle-News The Third Judicial District (encompassing Huerfano and Las Animas counties) and their Ac- cess to Justice Committee will host their sec- ond Ask-a-Law- yer Day event, which is de- signed to provide residents with free 20-minute le- gal consultations with local attor- neys regarding civil matters, in Trinidad on Monday, May 18. The event will run from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Las Animas County Courthouse at 200 East First Street. Reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling (719) 680-7333. Walk-ins will be served on a first-come, first- serve basis. The first Ask-a-Lawyer event in February was hugely success- ful, according to Third Judicial Court Judge Leslie Gerbracht and District Problem Solving Court Coordinator C.J. Montoya. Filling the third floor of the Las Animas County Courthouse, 36 people—mostly local residents, but some drove from as far as Pueblo—attend- ed the last event. Those people ranged in age from 20-60, rep- resented a huge swath of vary- ing backgrounds and said Judge Gerbracht—no one was turned away—during the three-hour session. “We just want to serve as many people as we can,” said Judge Ger- bracht. Montoya said, “The majority of [the cases lawyers consulted on at the last event] were domestic relations cases involving custody, divorce. That was about 60 per- cent of what we had. The rest were property, real estate cases, we had some money cases, small claims, civil stuff. A very few were [work- man’s] comp related.” Continued on Page 2 ...
