Scholars and educators often use others' copyrighted work online without permission. Copyright laws are changing, and infringement can occur if proper steps aren't followed. These steps include finding the copyright owner and getting permission to use their work, especially for non-profit educational use. A work may be used without permission if it transforms and adds value to the original work for a new audience, and only uses an appropriate portion. Copyright is an important issue and institutions should educate their communities on ownership and permitted uses.
