The two common sources of
change and loss.
Reactions to loss are individually different and can vary for
many reasons
Common experiences of students are
 migration,
parents’ separating,
breaking up with
boyfriends or girlfriends,
changes in peer group and death of a
grandparent.
What is stress?
Stress is the body’s response to
anything that makes us feel threatened
or pressured. It is caused by any kind
of demand to which we must adapt,
adjust, or respond. It is the body’s
automatic way of reacting to changes,
challenges, and demands placed on
us.
Stress is now understood as a way of life crisis (Masih & Gulrez,
2006) affecting any individual regardless of their developmental
stage (Banerjee & Chatterjee, 2016).
Stressors of middle and late
adolescent
• External Stressors
Comes from the outside of you
like certain situations and people.
• Internal Stressors
Coming from within your thoughts that
caused you to feel fearful about the
future and personal beliefs, which
include your own expectations.
Example: Negative self-talk, Unrealistic
Possible Sources of
Stress for Teenagers
 School demands (test and
homework) and
frustrations
 Negative thoughts and
feelings about themselves
 Change is their bodies
 Problems with friends
and/or peers at school
 Unsafe living environment
or neighborhood
 Separation or divorce of
parents
 Chronic illness or severe
problems in the family
 Death of a loved one
 Moving or changing
schools
 Taking on too many
activities
How do we Cope-
up with Stress?
There are suggestions on how an adolescent cope with
stress from American Psychological Journal (2014):
1. Get enough time for sleep.
After doing assignments,
activities and hanging out with
friends, it can be hard to get
enough sleep, especially during
school days. Ideally,
adolescents must get at least
nine hours of sleep every night.
However, there is a need to cut
back watching TV or engaging in
a lot of screen time in the
evening to maximize the change
sleeping soundly.
2. Focus on your strength.
Focus on your time thinking
about the things you are good at
and find ways to do more of
those things.
If you are good in dancing, you
might as well volunteer as dance
tutor in your school. Focusing on
your strengths will help you keep
your stresses in perspective.
How do we Cope-
up with Stress?
3. Engage in physical
activity. The most
effective stress reliever
or busters is your
physical activity. Engage
in any physical activities
you enjoy and build
them into your
routine..
How do we Cope-
up with Stress?
4. Do things that make
you happy. Do whatever
you like or love to do
(your hobbies) or just
listening to music, it
relaxes you or seeing
movies, or anything
which you may find
interesting and relaxing.
How do we Cope-
up with Stress?
5. Talk to someone. Talk to
your friends or anyone
whom you feel comfortable
with or to trusted adults. It
helps you manage your
stress. There are those who
felt relieved when they had
shared their stories to
trusted friends and adults.
