23. Tobermory Light Industrial
Mull and Iona Community Trust
were first approached by a
Tobermory resident in 2007.
A site at Ardmor near Glengorm
was identified by Forestry
Commission Scotland, Argyll &
Bute Council and Mull and Iona
Community Trust.
The area at Ardmor was zoned
as Business and Industry
Allocation in the new Argyll &
Bute Local Development Plan,
March 2015.
24. Tobermory Light Industrial
We had approval to purchase 0.8
hectares of land through the National
Forest Land Scheme in July 2015.
A feasibility study was completed in
2013
We did a survey of 30 businesses in early
2015
- 13 looking for new/additional premises
- 14 may do in the future
- 63% indicated they would have an
increase in turnover
- 33% indicated that new jobs could be
created
Next steps – source funding and
complete purchase of land
Finalise plans for the site
25. Mull and Iona Food Producers
About our group…
The formation of the Mull and Iona Food Producers Group emerged as an identified
need to create a way to showcase the high quality and variety of food produced and
served on the Islands of Mull and Iona.
Underpinning the whole project is an environmental ethos. Produced with respect for
animal welfare and environment, which tastes great and contributes to a sense of
place.
The Group emerged as a sub-group of the Isle of Mull and Iona Co-Operative. A group
of Mull and Iona businesses looking at ways of supporting and promoting island
enterprises.
On the back of the Visit Scotland ‘Year of food and drink’, A food trail was chosen as
the vehicle for showcasing our food offering and encourage visitors and residents to
enjoy food that is grown, caught and produced locally
The Food Trail has started to generate a co-ordinated Network of food producers; in
such a dispersed business population on Mull and Iona the benefit of this cannot be
underestimated.
Mull and Iona food trail is now live and consists of a website and facebook page. Which
is raising the profile of local food to locals and visitors alike. Success on a plate!
26. Mull and Iona Food Producers
What we did with the funding…
• We are very grateful to Mull Eagle Watch and MESS for the funding they have given us. We
have also received funding support from the Community Food Fund and Holiday Mull and
Iona.
• The group provided time and energy free of charge and the funds were spent on designing
the website and Food Trail Map/leaflet commissioning artwork by a local Iona graphic
designer, design and printing of 10,000 leaflets.
• Leaflets were distributed throughout participating businesses and local event such as the
Bunessan and Salen shows.
• It took longer to realize the project than expected as the 4 members of the food group run
busy summer tourist related businesses….
• We are now working on the 2016 Food Trail Map/leaflet. (MESS have just given us £208
towards this)
• We are also planning future developments to the Food Website . This may include pages
such as ‘What food is seasonal’ with associated recipes or food events .
• The biggest benefit we envisage is to be able to get the word out to a wider audience and
increase our profile as a Special Food Island worth visiting and without the funding this
project would not have been possible.
