The technology is growing rapidly and may become the dominant mobile standard after 2010.

5G is the fifth generation of wireless networking that aims to increase data transfer speeds up to three times faster than 4G. "This revolution will be powered by technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality, the Internet of Things, automation, advanced robotics and drones, among many others with the potential to remake virtually every facet of our society," notes Top Nonprofits (March 22, 2019).
Current networks cannot always meet consumer demands for data. "During periods of heavy use, consumers may experience slow speeds, unstable connections, delays, or loss of service. The effects can range from annoyances like a streaming movie freezing to life-threatening transmission delays between first responders in an emergency."
For instance, "in the health care sector, 5G could enable services such as remote patient monitoring, consultation, and even remote surgery. In transportation, 5G will be the backbone that autonomous vehicles rely on. A 2017 study from Deloitte estimated, 'self-driving cars enabled by wireless connectivity could reduce emissions by 40-90%, travel times by nearly 40% and delays by 20%.'”

Mobile Network Operators need to continuously expand capacity to meet the rapid growth in mobile data consumption. Crucially, this extra capacity needs to be delivered where demand arises, including deep indoors and in areas that are covered by fewer mobile radio sites. While substantial amounts of mid-bands spectrum and high-band spectrum are becoming available, the gap in the amount between low-band (sub-1 GHz) and mid-bands is increasing.

Economic impacts of submarine fiber optic cables and broadband connectivity i...
Subsea cables are the global backbone of the Internet, connecting people, businesses, and economies around the world. They connect us to the cloud, deliver streaming video, and increase efficiency and productivity for business. Subsea cables’ importance is all the more apparent during the Covid19 pandemic when many of us have switched to working from home, remote learning, and online gaming and entertainment.
We studied the economic impacts from subsea cables that arrived in Nigeria (e.g., WACS) to understand how they changed the economy. Improved connectivity led to increases in internet usage and decreases in costs, but infrastructure and affordability challenges meant that impacts were limited to select urban areas. Our results signal the promise connectivity improvements could have in other parts of the country.

Subsea cables’ importance is all the more apparent during the Covid19 pandemic when many of us have switched to working from home, remote learning, and online gaming and entertainment.
We studied the economic impacts from subsea cables that arrived in Nigeria (e.g., WACS) to understand how they changed the economy. Improved connectivity led to increases in internet usage and decreases in costs, but infrastructure and affordability challenges meant that impacts were limited to select urban areas. Our results signal the promise connectivity improvements could have in other parts of the country.

Wimax and 3G both enable wireless broadband connectivity. Wimax provides broadband access up to 30 miles for fixed locations and 3-10 miles for mobile.
