Cavitation occurs in control valves used for liquid when low fluid pressure causes bubbles to form from evaporation and then collapse as the bubbles implode. Cavitation can be measured by determining the number of gallons per minute (GPM) that will pass through a valve at 60 degrees Fahrenheit with a pressure drop of 1 pound per square inch (psi).
