Continental drift started when sea floor spreading caused the continents to move away from each other while they were all part of the supercontinent Pangea. Over time, Pangea split apart and the continents separated and became their own landmasses. Alfred Wegener had the idea of continental drift when he saw that South America fit into Africa like a puzzle piece.
