CARVING
Wood carving in the Philippines is a tradition
dating back to pre-colonial times. Native
Filipinos carved boats, plows, arrows, spears,
and other essential items, often creating
ornamental patterns for the use of the tribal
hierarchy and to celebrate special occasions.

WOOD CARVING in
the PHILIPPINES
• Wood carving capital of the Philippines
• Paete, Laguna is really proud about their wood
carvings. Paete, whose name was derived after a
chisel or paet, is a small town on the northeastern part
of Laguna. It is famous for its sweet lanzones and its
finely made woodcraft that it was declared the
Carving Capital of the Philippines on March 15, 2005.
PERFORMING ARTS
The Cultural Center of the Philippines is considered to
be the premiere place for performing arts. It has local
and international world-class guest artists.
The kundiman folk music is a popular music form that is
unique to the Philippine islands. It is music that is
a combination of both words and music. Also popular
with Filipinos is folk dancing. There are many variations
of dances, both ceremonial and traditional, that are
performed for many different occasions.
There are several types of dance in the Philippines, those with Muslim or Spanish influences as well as
those from the lowlands and mountains.
With over a million Muslim Filipinos residing mainly on the island of Mindanao, there are several dances
that are heavily influenced by Islam. A popular dance, the langka-baluang is one that is performed by
male dancers as an angry monkey. One of the oldest Filipino dances, the singkil is a noble and difficult
dance that is based upon a legend of the Maranao people of Mindanao. This legend, written during the
14th century, retells the plight of a princess in the middle of a forest. While she is in there the forest fairies
or diwatas start an earthquake, and only by avoiding trees, along with her slave, is she finally able to be
saved by a prince. Even now, royal princesses in the Sulu Archipelago are required to learn this
dance. Another ritual is one in which an entire village participates, the pag-ipat. When a family
member is ill, the belief is that an ancestral spirit (tinunungan) has caused the disease and needs to be
appeased. Depending on the severity of the illness and the financial status of the family, this ritual can
last from a day to several days. A folk healer performs the ritual while having possession of the spirit.
The Spanish influence in the Philippines brought about many
dances that use a Maria Clara dress (a character in Noli Me
Tangere) and an embroidered long-sleeve short made from
pineapple fibers for their costumes. The Filipinos adapted these
Spanish dances by using bamboo castanets and Asian
fans. Carinosa, which means loveable or affectionate, is a dance
that is known all through the Philippines. The dancers "flirt" using a
handkerchief or fan, by playing hide and seek with them. Part of a
wedding ritual, the sabalan lulay, is a dance that begins with a
man dancing around a woman (his partner) until she consents to
dance with him.
Possibly the most popular and best known dances are those from the
Philippine lowlands. A place of extreme beauty and love of life and
simplicity, the lowlands have a passion for music. A spirited dance
from Bayambang is the Binasuan, which is basically a balancing
act. The dancers skillfully handle glasses are partially filled with rice
wine and usually perform at birthdays and weddings. Maglalatik, a
simulated-war dance, is a four part dance which starts out with mock-
fighting and ends with reconciliation. Initially a depiction of a fight
between the Christians and Moros, it is also performed as a mark of
respect for San Isidro de Labrador, the patron saint of farmers.
LITERATURE
Philippine literature reflects a diverse group of works
which are mostly grounded on traditional folktales,
socio-political histories, and real-life experiences. Such
books have since promoted Filipino cultural values, told
daily struggles of locals, and have instilled a
remarkable lesson or two. Here are the books worth
your time.
Among the great novels in Philippine literature, Noli Me
Tángere (Touch Me Not) is the most controversial and
widely-known – it’s included in the current education
curriculum of Filipino high school students. Written by
the country’s national hero, Dr. José Rizal, this novel
sparked the social awakening of Filipinos during the
Spanish colonial era. As Rizal cannot fathom the
unfairness of the Spanish priests and the ruling
government at the time, his purpose of writing the book
was to expose the ills of Philippine society at the time. In
this revolutionary book, you’ll learn about the story of
Crisostomo Ibarra, how he dealt with Spanish
authorities, and how he prepared for his revenge, as
told in Rizal’s 2nd book, El Filibusterismo.
Another famous masterpiece in Philippine literature,
Francisco Balagtas’ Florante at Laura is written in the
form of ‘awit’ where there are four lines per stanza and
12 syllables per line. Set in the fictional kingdom of
Albania, it tackles the story between Duke Florante and
Princess Laura, who’s also being pursued by Florante’s
enemy Count Adolfo. As a literary classic, this book has
become a favorite play not only among Filipino high
school students, but has been showcased in grand
theaters such as Gantimpala Theater and the Cultural
Center of the Philippines.
Mga Ibong Mandaragit (Birds of Prey) was written by
Filipino writer and social activist, Amado V. Hernandez.
Being a novel that tackles social-political issues,
particularly Philippine revolution and neocolonialism, it
has a connection to Rizal’s earlier novels – Noli Me
Tángere and El Filibusterismo. There was a passage in
the novel where protagonist Mando Plaridel was tested
by Tata Matyas on what he knows about Rizal’s
controversial books. As he narrated the living
conditions of Filipinos then, readers will note how
Hernandez had high hopes for significant changes that
would uplift the Philippine society.

Local textiles and
fabrics
• 1. Piña fabric
• Dubbed as the Queen of Philippines textiles, piña
fabric is often used in making the country’s national
costumes, i.e. barong and terno.
• It’s largely produced in Kalibo, Aklan, where
communities of indigenous weavers still use
traditional weaving and dyeing techniques to this
day.
• 2. Abaca
• Earlier Visayan textiles were traditionally made from
hemp materials. This comes from the abaca plant,
also known as Manila hemp. It is a wild banana
species that doesn’t bear edible fruit but produces a
strong fiber.
• Abaca cloth is produced in many regions in the
Philippines. But the T’boli tribe of Southern Mindanao
is most popular for their artistry and special hand-
woven abaca fabric called Nalak.
• 3. Jusi
• Jusi is the lovechild of abaca and piña fibers. Still
sheer but made with a stronger and tighter
weave. When woven along with locally grown silk
threads, cotton, and rayon, jusi fibers make the iconic
Hablon textile.
• Hablon is the fast-rising star of Philippine textiles. It is
currently making waves in local and international
haute couture. Though, traditionally, it is used for
products such as the colorful, checkered patadyong
skirt and bandanas.
POTTERY
Pots are ceramic vessels that are made by molding
clay into its wanted shape and then leaving it in an
environment with an elevated temperature thereby
making it solid and sturdy. It is widely recognized as
one of better tools that humans invented since it
managed to store the surplus of food Neolithic humans
gathered.

  • 73. WOOD CARVING in the PHILIPPINES • Wood carving capital of the Philippines • Paete, Laguna is really proud about their wood carvings. Paete, whose name was derived after a chisel or paet, is a small town on the northeastern part of Laguna. It is famous for its sweet lanzones and its finely made woodcraft that it was declared the Carving Capital of the Philippines on March 15, 2005.
  • 74. PERFORMING ARTS The Cultural Center of the Philippines is considered to be the premiere place for performing arts. It has local and international world-class guest artists.
  • 75. The kundiman folk music is a popular music form that is unique to the Philippine islands. It is music that is a combination of both words and music. Also popular with Filipinos is folk dancing. There are many variations of dances, both ceremonial and traditional, that are performed for many different occasions.
  • 76. There are several types of dance in the Philippines, those with Muslim or Spanish influences as well as those from the lowlands and mountains. With over a million Muslim Filipinos residing mainly on the island of Mindanao, there are several dances that are heavily influenced by Islam. A popular dance, the langka-baluang is one that is performed by male dancers as an angry monkey. One of the oldest Filipino dances, the singkil is a noble and difficult dance that is based upon a legend of the Maranao people of Mindanao. This legend, written during the 14th century, retells the plight of a princess in the middle of a forest. While she is in there the forest fairies or diwatas start an earthquake, and only by avoiding trees, along with her slave, is she finally able to be saved by a prince. Even now, royal princesses in the Sulu Archipelago are required to learn this dance. Another ritual is one in which an entire village participates, the pag-ipat. When a family member is ill, the belief is that an ancestral spirit (tinunungan) has caused the disease and needs to be appeased. Depending on the severity of the illness and the financial status of the family, this ritual can last from a day to several days. A folk healer performs the ritual while having possession of the spirit.
  • 77. The Spanish influence in the Philippines brought about many dances that use a Maria Clara dress (a character in Noli Me Tangere) and an embroidered long-sleeve short made from pineapple fibers for their costumes. The Filipinos adapted these Spanish dances by using bamboo castanets and Asian fans. Carinosa, which means loveable or affectionate, is a dance that is known all through the Philippines. The dancers "flirt" using a handkerchief or fan, by playing hide and seek with them. Part of a wedding ritual, the sabalan lulay, is a dance that begins with a man dancing around a woman (his partner) until she consents to dance with him.
  • 78. Possibly the most popular and best known dances are those from the Philippine lowlands. A place of extreme beauty and love of life and simplicity, the lowlands have a passion for music. A spirited dance from Bayambang is the Binasuan, which is basically a balancing act. The dancers skillfully handle glasses are partially filled with rice wine and usually perform at birthdays and weddings. Maglalatik, a simulated-war dance, is a four part dance which starts out with mock- fighting and ends with reconciliation. Initially a depiction of a fight between the Christians and Moros, it is also performed as a mark of respect for San Isidro de Labrador, the patron saint of farmers.
  • 79. LITERATURE Philippine literature reflects a diverse group of works which are mostly grounded on traditional folktales, socio-political histories, and real-life experiences. Such books have since promoted Filipino cultural values, told daily struggles of locals, and have instilled a remarkable lesson or two. Here are the books worth your time.
  • 80. Among the great novels in Philippine literature, Noli Me Tángere (Touch Me Not) is the most controversial and widely-known – it’s included in the current education curriculum of Filipino high school students. Written by the country’s national hero, Dr. José Rizal, this novel sparked the social awakening of Filipinos during the Spanish colonial era. As Rizal cannot fathom the unfairness of the Spanish priests and the ruling government at the time, his purpose of writing the book was to expose the ills of Philippine society at the time. In this revolutionary book, you’ll learn about the story of Crisostomo Ibarra, how he dealt with Spanish authorities, and how he prepared for his revenge, as told in Rizal’s 2nd book, El Filibusterismo.

  • 82. Another famous masterpiece in Philippine literature, Francisco Balagtas’ Florante at Laura is written in the form of ‘awit’ where there are four lines per stanza and 12 syllables per line. Set in the fictional kingdom of Albania, it tackles the story between Duke Florante and Princess Laura, who’s also being pursued by Florante’s enemy Count Adolfo. As a literary classic, this book has become a favorite play not only among Filipino high school students, but has been showcased in grand theaters such as Gantimpala Theater and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
  • 83. Mga Ibong Mandaragit (Birds of Prey) was written by Filipino writer and social activist, Amado V. Hernandez. Being a novel that tackles social-political issues, particularly Philippine revolution and neocolonialism, it has a connection to Rizal’s earlier novels – Noli Me Tángere and El Filibusterismo. There was a passage in the novel where protagonist Mando Plaridel was tested by Tata Matyas on what he knows about Rizal’s controversial books. As he narrated the living conditions of Filipinos then, readers will note how Hernandez had high hopes for significant changes that would uplift the Philippine society.
