Docker extracted its core container runtime component called containerd and donated it to an open source community project to accelerate innovation across the ecosystem. Containerd provides the core primitives to manage containers on Linux and Windows hosts and will be fully compliant with the Open Container Initiative standard. Major container platforms like Docker will use containerd as their core runtime component to provide a "boring" infrastructure component and allow for greater cross-platform compatibility and collaboration.

containerd is an industry-standard core container runtime with an emphasis on simplicity, robustness and portability. It is available as a daemon for Linux and Windows, which can manage the complete container lifecycle of its host system: image transfer and storage, container execution and supervision, low-level storage and network attachments, etc..

It also added WireGuard VPN, improved security with LSM rules and eBPF, and plans to graduate Kubernetes support. Future work includes cultivating the security community, contributing upstream, and stable releases with Containerd 1.0 integration.

In this talk, we looked at the sphere of modern container runtimes that start with Docker's emergence in 2013/2014 to today's additions of rkt, OCI's runc, containerd, cri-o, and Cloud Foundry's garden-runc project, many of them consolidating around the OCI standard for container runtime and image specifications.

1. Docker EE will include an unmodified Kubernetes distribution to provide orchestration capabilities alongside Docker Swarm.
2. When running mixed workloads across orchestrators, resource contention is a risk and it is recommended to separate workloads by orchestrator on each node for now.

Estes helped bring features like user namespaces to Docker and helped design the multi-platform image specification. It hosts projects like Containerd, Kubernetes, CoreDNS, Linkerd, Prometheus, Fluentd, OpenTracing, and others. Containerd and rkt are container runtimes. Kubernetes is an orchestration system. CNCI, CoreDNS, and Linkerd provide container networking, DNS/service discovery, and service mesh capabilities. Prometheus, Fluentd, OpenTracing provide monitoring, logging, and distributed tracing.

Docker and Kubernetes provide tools for deploying and managing applications in containers. Docker allows packaging applications into containers that can be run on any Linux machine. Kubernetes provides a platform for automating deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications. It groups related containers that make up an application into logical units called pods and provides mechanisms for service discovery, load balancing, and configuration management across a cluster. Many cloud providers now offer managed Kubernetes services to deploy and run containerized applications on their infrastructure.

The technology industry has been abuzz about cloud workload containerization since the open source Docker project became a phenomenon in early 2014.
Meanwhile, an OpenStack Containers Team was formed and the Magnum project launched to provide users with a convenient Containers-as-a-Service solution for OpenStack environments.
As the potential of both technologies emerged, many wanted to see shared governance over the baseline container specification and runtime technology to ensure an open cloud ecosystem.
This past June, a new group was formed with a goal of creating open, industry standards around container formats and runtimes, called the Open Container Initiative (http://www.opencontainers.org).
So how will OpenStack Magnum influence - and be influenced by - the new OCI group? Why is the OCI under the stewardship of the Linux Foundation? What is the scope of the OCI effort? What project goals and/or principles will guide their work?

Interest in deploying software using Docker containers has been growing very quickly. Clients are hearing all the "buzz" around Docker and beginning to investigate how they can take advantage of this new technology. In the latest v2.1 release of IBM PureApplication, support has been added that allows clients to easily create patterns that deploy Docker containers as software components using the pattern editor. Now clients can build upon the skills they already have with patterns and easily add Docker containers. Because the new support for Docker is integrated with the existing patterns, the new technology can be added incrementally at a pace that makes sense for the customer's business. There is a wealth of information on building deep learning models with PyTorch or TensorFlow. Anyone interested in building a deep learning model is only a quick search away from a number of clear and well written tutorials that will take them from zero knowledge to having a working image classifier. But what happens when you need to deploy these models in a production setting? At Salesforce, we use TensorFlow models to help us provide customers with insights into their data, and we do this as close to real-time as possible. Designing these systems in a scalable manner requires overcoming a number of design challenges, but the core component is Docker. Docker enables us to design highly scalable systems by allowing us to focus on service interactions, rather than how our services will interact with the hardware. Docker is also at the core of our test infrastructure, allowing developers and data scientists to build and test the system in an end to end manner on their local machines. While some of this may sound complex, the core message is simplicity - Docker allows us to focus on the aspects of the system that matter, greatly simplifying our lives.

This shift poses a lot of new challenges for application monitoring, ranging from practical issues (need for automation) to technical challenges (Docker networking) to organizational topics (blurring line between software engineers and operations) to fundamental questions (define what is an application). In this talk we show how Docker changed the way we do monitoring, how modern application monitoring systems work, and what future developments we expect.

When the COVID 19 pandemic started, Engineering Ingegneria Informatica Group (1.25 billion euros of revenues, 65 offices around the world, 12.000 employees) was forced to put their digital transformation to the test in order to maintain operational continuity. In this session, Clemente Biondo, the Tech Lead of the Information Systems Department, will share how his company is reacting to this unforeseeable scenario and how Docker-driven digital transformation had paved the path for work to continue remotely. Clemente will discuss learnings moving from colocated teams, manual approaches, email based-business processes, and a monolithic application to a mature DevOps culture characterized by a distributed autonomous workforce and a continuous deployment process that deploys backward-compatible Docker containerized microservices into hybrid multi cloud datacenters an average of twice a day with zero-downtime. He will detail how they use Docker to unify dev, test and production environments, and as an efficient and automated mechanism for deploying applications. Lastly, Clemente shares how, in our darkest hour, he and others are working to shine their brightest light.
Predicting Space Weather with Docker
The document discusses how NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center transitioned from a monolithic architecture to microservices using Docker. It describes how they started with a small verification project, then replaced their critical GOES satellite data source. This improved developers' morale and delivery speed. SS&C Eze provides various products in the stock market domain. We spent the last couple of years building Eclipse which is an investment suite born in cloud. The journey so far has been very interesting. The very first version of the product were a bunch of monolithic windows services and deployed using Octopus tool. We successfully managed to bring all the monolithic problem to the cloud and created a nightmare for ourselves. We then started applying microservices architecture principles and started breaking the monolithic into small services. Very soon we realized that we need a better packaging/deployment tool. Docker looked like a magical solution to our problem. Since its adoption, It has not only solved the deployment problem for us but has made a deep impact on different aspects of SDLC. It allowed us to use heterogeneous technology stacks, simplified development environment setup, simplified our testing strategy, improved our speed of delivery, and made our developers more productive. In this talk I would like to share our experience of using Docker and its positive impact on our SDLC.
Kubernetes at Datadog Scale
Kubernetes networking can be complex to scale due to issues like growing iptables rules, but newer solutions are helping. Pod networking uses CNI plugins like flannel or Calico to assign each pod an IP and allow communication. Service networking uses kube-proxy and iptables or IPVS for load balancing to pods. DNS is used to resolve service names to IPs. While Kubernetes networking brings flexibility, operators must learn the nuances of their specific CNI plugin and issues can arise, but the ecosystem adapts quickly to new needs and changes don't impact all workloads.

In this session I'll walk through the processes and practicalities of taking an older Windows app, making it run in containers with Kubernetes, and then building a simple API wrapper to host the whole stack as a cloud-based SaaS product.
There's a lot of technology here from a real world case study, and I'll focus on:
- running Windows apps in Docker containers
- building a .NET Core API which can run in Linux or Windows containers
- running the stack in Kubernetes with Docker Desktop locally and AKS in the cloud
- configuring AKS workloads in Azure to burst out to Azure Container Instances

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
