In general machines are designed with a set of elements to reduce cost, ease of assembly and manufacturability etc. One also needs to address stress issues at the contact regions between any two elements, stress is induced when a load is applied to two elastic solids in contact. If not considered and addressed adequately serious flaws can occur within the mechanical design and the end product may fail to qualify. Stresses formed by the contact of two radii can cause extremely high stresses, the application and evaluation of Hertzian contact stress equations can estimate maximum stresses produced and ways to mitigate can be sought. Hertz developed a theory to calculate the contact area and pressure between the two surfaces and predict the resulting compression and stress induced in the objects. The roller bearing assembly and spur gear pair assembly is an example were the assembly undergoes fatigue failure due to contact stresses. This paper discusses the hertz contact theory validation using finite element Analysis.

In the modern open source world, where licenses and DVCS’ allow instant and infinite forking, the only true control point for a community-based open source project is its name, its logo, and its identity. Your brand is your identity: this is how the rest of the world sees you and your project. Your brand is most of what your users see, and is a key way to attract new contributors. How can a volunteer-led open source project control it’s own identity and brand? How do you manage your project’s brand when most of your volunteers are coders who don’t want to get involved with lawyers or deal with enforcing trademarks? How can the community keep their brand independent and free of commercial influence, so they can ensure the maximum number of people and corporations are interested in participating in their project? In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
