Energy Savers
To CARE about
• In the race towards exams, it can be easy to forget the other goals of science education:
scientific literacy (science in life) and STE(A)M careers (science in society).
• CONNECT is an EC-funded project offering a new kind of resource, called a Science Action.
• It’s a set of activities to integrate a real-life challenge into an existing topic and it ticks lots of boxes:
Introduction
See more about Energy Savers Science Action
Engage with a real-life challenge
Know and apply a science concept
Practice an enquiry skill
Understand how science affects their world
Interact with a scientist or engineer ( CONNECT Platform)
Talk about science with family-members

Introduction
Imagine being able to travel from London to New York in an hour!
Wake in London
Go to work in New York
This is the my vision of an energy-saving train of
the future - the ‘Hyperloop’.
It will whizz through an almost airless tube.
Why will the Hyperloop use less energy than a normal train?
Elon Musk, entrepreneur
Energy Savers
To KNOW about
Friction with the air and track
means energy is wasted as heat.
Whereas the hyperloop will waste
very little energy.
With normal trains, lots of
energy is wasted.
Low friction because the tube is
almost airless and the train hovers
over the track.
I create energy saving
inventions.
Not massive ones like the
hyperloop but cheap
devices that will help
people save energy at
home.
Your friend is an inventor.
I have so many
ideas but I’m not
sure which is best.
Can you help me choose one and get
the funding to make it?

SunCook

cook food
“I want to make a cheap device to
help people save energy at home.
I’ve come up with 10 inventions.
Look them and help me choose the
best one”.
Energy-saving inventions
Invention Energy-saving /3 Practicality /3 Usefulness /3 Total /9 Rank
1. Score the 10 energy-saving inventions
Energy-saving /3 - Think about what the invention replaces. Will it use less energy? A little or a lot?
Practicality /3 - Is the invention definitely going to work? Or is there a chance it won’t?
Usefulness /3 - Would you use the invention? Would you buy it, or not?
2. Choose the best invention
Add up the scores. Rank them in order to find out which invention came top.

Inventions 1-5
Turbine Headband
Charge your phone
while you run.
SunCook A portable oven to cook food with the
Sun’s energy.It will boil water in 30
minutes in hot sun (35°C).
Put food in the tube.
Shiny surfaces reflect the Sun’s
energy towards the food.
As you run through the air, It spins
the turbine around and generates a
small amount of electricity.
Coffee Chum
Plug in this reusable coffee
cup and charge it up.
It will release heat and keep
your coffee warm for up to 3
hours.
Washing Pod
A portable washing
machine.
Put the washing, warm water
and detergent in
the basket.
Move the handle to spin the
basket and wash the clothes.
10 minutes of spinning is
enough for one wash.
Power Disc
Put your hot drink on the Power
Disc and it will charge your phone.
The Disc works best when the
temperature of the drink is a lot
hotter than the room.

Inventions 6-10
River Charger
A portable turbine. When a fast-
moving stream flows through it,
it generates electricity.
It can be used to charge
phones, laptops,
speakers etc.
SolarCap Solar panels on the hat turn
sunlight into electricity.
Speedy Peely
Pop in your spuds, plug in the
Speedy Peely and watch it peel.
Hot Hoodie
On a sunny day, solar panels warm the
heating pads to keep you feeling toasty.
Solar panels on
shoulders Heating pads
inside
Charge your phone while you
are out and about.
Tiny metal teeth scrape off
the skin of the potatoes as
they spin around.
Skip Light
Just skip and the rope
charges up.
Then flick a switch and the rope
will light up. 30 minutes of
skipping gives 2 hours of light.
Energy Savers
To DO something about
Helping the inventor SS1
Thank you for reviewing
the energy-saving
inventions!
Now help me to raise funds so I can
manufacture the SolarCap.
Task 2. Design the fundraising page (SS3)
I’ve started a page on the website ‘Invention funder’.
People can pledge money to build my invention.
Can you write these sections:
A. The SolarCap – say what it is and what it does.
B. How it works –add in the names of the energy stores
and pathways. Use SS2.
C. How it saves energy – fill the gaps. Use your answer
to task 1.
D. Pledge money today – Write sentences about the
benefits of SolarCap to persuade people to pledge money.
I chose the SolarCap because I know it will
work, and I think it will be popular.
Task 1: Choose the best type of solar panel
SS2 shows you the three types to choose from. Choose the
one that will charge up the phone fastest.
