Discussion: Definitions of Culture
A veritable plethora of scholarship has been devoted to attempting to define culture. The concept is complex, yet most individuals have some idea about what the term means and includes. The idea of culture is so central to so much that makes us human, that it is well worth our time to explore and unpack its meaning in some depth. We may find that our ideas about culture share much in common with others' ideas about culture, but we may also find some nuances or emphases in some definitions that are less apparent in other definitions.
For this Discussion, you will closely examine various definitions of culture and the importance it may have to the psychology community.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Review the Learning Resources for this week and consider various definitions of culture.
By Day 4
Based on your review of the Learning Resources,
post
your responses to the following questions.
What are some definitions of culture that researchers have utilized?
What is a definition of culture that resonates with you and why?
Why should psychologists be interested in understanding culture?
Note:
Be sure to support your
postings and responses
with specific references to the Learning Resources and identify current relevant literature to support your work.

Conference Report: UNESCO, in partnership with Central Library, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and the Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) organised a national Conference on Opening up by Closing the Circle: Strengthening Open Access in India. The event was organised at JNU, New Delhi on 21st October, 2013 to mark the Open Access Week.
The organisers intended to focus on the need to create an enabling environment for open access (OA) in India, promote and upscale existing OA initiatives, and encourage the development of new OA programmes. This was planned to do by ‘closing the circle’ or linking multiple stakeholder groups, viz. researchers, librarians, archivists, publishers, technologists, authors and policymakers, taking into account their concerns and views and providing a platform to advocate for a common cause.
Conference program created using Microsoft Word for the non-profit group PAPOR. Word was utilized so future conference organizers would be able to edit the document/graphics without knowing a specialized design program.

Evaluating the knowledge production in discussions at a symposiumNigel Cartlidge
Discussions are a crucial part of the research process. Research events that include more discussion-based sessions have gained in popularity over the past two decades. It is suggested that this shift highlights the significance of more collaborative events to enhance the social research process. However, it is not clear how we can be sure such discussions are really benefiting the process – evaluating the production of knowledge coming out of these types of events is challenging. This presentation demonstrates how phronetic interpretive analysis has proven to be a useful evaluation method to assess the knowledge-building potential of collaborative research events. We present a case study of the evaluation of an Australasian Early Career Urban Research Network (AECURN) symposium of early-career urban researchers, an event organised to share and discuss research and knowledge about urban studies and place. The conclusions demonstrate both the knowledge-building potential of discussions within ECR symposiums and the theoretical framework used to facilitate its application to the evaluation of other research network event initiatives.

Conferences and debates on biomedical applications of biotechnologies constitute relevant sources of data for investigating the discursive construction of Precision or Personalized Medicine (PM), which may affect PM related policy making in the future. This presentation advances some preliminary results arising from a discourse analysis held in one of such events.
