Following the UK's exit from the EU and European Single Market on March 29, 2019, cross-border e-commerce between the UK and EU will be significantly impacted. If no UK-EU trade agreement is reached, shipments will face customs duties and VAT in the country of import. A trade agreement could eliminate customs duties but still require import VAT. Maintaining a customs union would prevent trade barriers but the future of the EU VAT regime is uncertain. Changes to EU VAT rules in 2021 will also eliminate small consignment exemptions potentially complicating UK-EU commerce further.
What is EU timber regulation?
The EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) prohibits illegally harvested timber in the EU market and requires operators to implement due diligence systems to minimize the risk of using illegal wood. It was adopted in 2010 after earlier proposals received criticism for lacking a timber legality prohibition. The EUTR complements FLEGT voluntary partnership agreements and is expected to encourage more countries to negotiate VPAs by providing a regulatory stick alongside the cooperative carrots of VPAs.

Once Article 50 is invoked, there is a maximum period of two years before the UK finally leaves the EU. The terms of the UK’s new economic relationship with the EU also remain uncertain.
