Conditioning is a form of learning where organisms acquire new behaviors and responses. There are two types of conditioning: classical and operant. Classical conditioning, developed by Ivan Pavlov, is when a natural reflex response becomes linked to a new stimulus over time. Pavlov discovered four principles of classical conditioning: extinction, spontaneous recovery, stimulus generalization, and stimulus discrimination. Conditioning principles can be used in education to develop good habits, remove bad habits, reduce fears and anxieties, and help teach basic skills.
