Writing a conclusion
Writing a good conclusion is essential. Your conclusion should:
• Include an introduction sentence
• Summarise the main points of your discussion, in relation to
the question. Try and rank each factor’s importance.
• If you have written mini-conclusions at the end of each section of
your essay, then the first requirement is fairly straightforward
• Give a definitive answer to the specific question that you
are answering
• Provide evidence to support your conclusion
It is too simplistic to suggest that only one factor led to Hitler becoming
Chancellor of Germany. [Introduction sentence] The Weimar system itself has
received much criticism, not least given the instability that proportional
representation elections brought to its many coalition governments, and whilst
this is an issue it does not explain why the Nazis rather than other extreme
parties came to power. This same criticism can be posed in terms of the notion
that the Nazis achieved power because of political disputes between leaders
such as Franz von Papen and Kurt von Schleicher, as it again fails to explain why
other parties did not instead succeed. The personal impact of Hitler is a
compelling reason – particularly in terms of explaining why it was the Nazis and
not other parties who triumphed – but ignores the fact that for much of the
1920s the Nazis were electorally irrelevant, suggesting other factors of
significance. [Summary] The one factor that clearly explains why Hitler became
Chancellor was economic strife within Germany. [Conclusion] Germans were
desperate to see economic improvement and it was the Nazi message which
seemed most likely to achieve this. The fact that Nazi support was strongest
during economic depression and weakest in times of economic plenty
emphasises that it was economic problems that ultimately caused the collapse
of the Weimar Republic. [Evidence]
