CONCEPT OF INTERNET
 Internet is a network of networks that is used to
interlinked many different types of computers all
over the world.
 The internet is the largest computer network in the
world, connecting millions of computers.
4
 There are four types of network
1. PAN
2. LAN
3. MAN
4. WAN
1.PAN(Personal Area Network)
 Personal area network is a network arranged within
an individual.
 Personal area network is used for connecting the
computer devices of personal use.
5
Example When we connect our mobile to PC by using
USB or Wifi this type of network is called Personal Area
Network.
6
2.LAN(Local Area Network)
 Local area network is a group of computers connected to
each other in a small area such as building, office, college,
university,bank etc.
7
3.MAN(Metropolitan Area Network)
 A metropolitan area network is a network that covers larger
geographical area by interconnecting a different LAN to form
a larger.
 Government agencies use MAN to connect to the citizens
and private industries.
 MAN is used in communication between the banks in a city.
8
4.WAN(Wide Area Network)
 A wide area network is a network that extends over a very
large geographical area such as states or countries.
 A wide area network is widely used in the field of business,
government and education.
 This wide area network is called as internet.
9
History of Internet:
 The internet started as an experiment in the late 1960 by the
Advance Research Project Agency (ARPA).Now called the
Defence Advance Research Project Agency (DARPA).
 ARPANet(Advance Research Project Agency Network)was
developed under U.S Department of Defence (DOD),it was
developed to survive nuclear attack.
 ARPANet was world’s first operational network developed in
1967.
 ARPANet consisted of four main computers located at:
>University of California,Los Angeles
10
>University of California,Santa Barbara
>The Stanford Research Institute
>University of Utah
 In 1980 NSF(National Science Foundation) started to make
high capacity network for Academic & Engineering
Research.This network called as NSFnet.
 In 1990 internetworking of ARPANet, NSFnet & other private
network resulted into INTERNET.

11
Basic Elements of Internet
1. World Wide Web(W.W.W)
 It is a collection of webpages found on this network of
computers. Our web-browser uses the internet to access
the web.
2. Web Page
 A webpage is a specific collection of information provided
by a website and displayed to a user in a web-browser.
12
3. Website
 A website is a collection of webpages and related content
that is identified by a common domain name and published
on at least one web-browser.
4. Web-browser
 A web-browser is an application used to access and view
websites.
Eg: Microsoft internet explorer, Google, Mozilla Firefox, Apple
Safari, Chrome etc.
13
4. Server
 Any computer that makes services available to other
computers, that is called as a server.
5. Protocol
 A protocol is a standard set of rules that allow electronic
devices to communicate with each other. These rules may be
transmitted, what commands are used to send and receive
data.
Eg: TCP(Transmission Control Protocol)
IP(Internet Protocol)
6. URL(Uniform Resource Locator): It is a
unique name that identifies an internet site(website).
14
Need of Internet:
1. Research
 The internet allows us to locate information on the subjects
we are researching.
Example:- Google Scholar, Infomine
 https://scholar.google.com/
15
2. Blogging
 Blogging allows students and teachers to post written
thoughts to a website. The blogger can write on any subject
to be viewed and commented on by others.
3. Communicate
 Teachers, students and parents can communicate easily
through internet.
4. Networking
 Students can interact with each other and share new ideas.
16
5. Electronic books (e-books)
 The internet allows us to view publication in digital form.
6. Podcast
 A podcast is a digital audio or video file that is intermittent,
downloadable, program driven, mainly with a host and or
theme and convenient, usually via an automated feed with
computer software.
7. Administration
 Nowadays in the field of education most of the
administrational work is done with the help of internet.
17
8. Online class
9. Online banking
10. Online shopping
11. Social networking
Eg: WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Facebook etc.
12. Staying updated
18
Importance of Internet in
Education:
1. Enhanced Lessons
 Teachers can make use of the internet by giving students
extra resources and materials from the internet such as
interactive lessons & educational games.
2. Communication
 It is used to be that students that forgot work, missed a
lecture or couldn’t remember an assignment were out of
until taking face to face with a teacher or a classmate.
19
3. Accessibility
 A number of universities, such as Harvard,Yale and Stanford have
opened up free courses on a variety of subjects that are accessible
to anyone for free.
4. Study & Research
 The internet contains a wealth of knowledge that is available
instantly upon any search. Because of this, the internet has
suppressed libraries as a source for information gathering &
research.
5. Cost effective & Affordable Education
 One of the largest barriers to education is high cost.
 Internet provides education through videos and webtutorials
which is affordable to everyone and cost effective.
20
6. Student-Teacher&Peer Interaction
 The internet has allowed students to be in constant touch
with their teachers or peers with the help of social media or
messaging Apps.
7. Effective Teaching & Learning Tool
 The internet has become major tool for effective teaching as
well as a learning tool.
 Teachers can teach with the use of animation, powerpoint
slides and images to capture attention of students.
8. Easy Access to Quality Education
 Students can easily access quality of education materials like
tutorial videos on YouTube for free or pay fees online for
more quality study materials.
21
9. Keeping Us Updated With Latest
Information
 Internet keeps us up to date with the latest information
regarding the any subjects in which we are interested.
