This document summarizes a study that used interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore the personal experiences of six online students using asynchronous text-based communication. Four major themes were identified from interviews with the students: 1) an inability to fully express themselves without non-verbal cues or in-person interaction, 2) difficulties establishing relationships with other students when communication is limited to written texts, 3) tendencies to compare themselves to other students based on limited written profiles, and 4) views that writing is an ineffective medium for learning compared to in-person interaction. The findings suggest that online students struggle to adjust to computer-mediated communication and lack a sense of community, highlighting a need for better social and academic support in online learning environments.
