➢ WHAT IS PRINTER ?
❖ A printer is an output device that produces text and graphics on paper.
❖ External device that communicates with another digital device to print
what a user sees on a screen.
❖ A printer is an external hardware device responsible for taking computer
data and generating a hard copy of that data. Printers are one of the
most used peripherals on computers and are commonly used to print text,
images, and photos. The picture is the HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer
and an example of a computer printer.
❖ In addition, a few modern printers can directly interface to electronic
media such as memory card, or to image capture devices such as digital
camera.

➢ A BRIEF HISTORY OF COMPUTER PRINTERS
❖ Computer printers can be found in numerous homes
and offices nowadays, but it took almost half a century
for people to realize their importance and for engineers
and designers to adjust them as to become available
for everyone who needs them.
❖ In 1938, Chester Carlson invented a dry printing process
called electrophotography commonly called a Xerox.
❖ In 1953, the first high-speed printer was developed by
Remington-Rand for use on the Univac computer.
However, the dot matrix was marketed in 1957 by IBM.
First Laser Printer
❖ The original laser printer called EARS was developed at the Xerox Palo
Alto Research Center beginning in 1969 and completed in November,
1971
❖ The Xerox 9700 Electronic Printing System, the first xerographic laser
printer product, was released in 1977.
❖ The IBM 3800 Printing System was the industry’s first high-speed, laser
printer. A laser printer that operated at speeds of more than 100
impressions-per-minute. It was the first printer to combine laser
technology and electrophotography.
❖ Soon in 1984, the LaserJet printers were launched in the market by the
Hewlett Packard. The printer had the resolution of 300dpi and had a cost
price of $3600.
❖ In 1976, the inkjet printer was invented.
➢ A BRIEF HISTORY OF COMPUTER PRINTERS
➢ TYPE OF PRINTER
❖ Printers can be divided into two main groups, impact printer and non-impact
printer.
❖ Impact printer produces text and images when tiny wire pins on print head strike
the ink ribbon by physically contacting the paper.
❖ Non-impact printer produces text and graphics on paper without actually striking
the paper.
❖ Printers can also be categorized based on the print method or print technology.
❖ The most popular ones are inkjet printer, laser printer, dot-matrix printer and
thermal printer.
❖ Among these, only dot-matrix printer is impact printer and the others are non-
impact printers.
