Responsibilities	
  
Through	
  this	
  internship	
  you	
  will	
  gain	
  valuable	
  experience	
  by	
  assisting	
  in	
  the	
  continued	
  
development	
  of	
  composting	
  guidelines	
  and	
  their	
  implementation	
  for	
  the	
  SJSU	
  campus.	
  	
  	
  You	
  will	
  
learn	
  to	
  engage	
  individuals	
  and	
  groups	
  in	
  meaningful	
  ways	
  about	
  how	
  and	
  why	
  to	
  compost.	
  You	
  
will	
  also	
  have	
  the	
  opportunity	
  to	
  meet	
  people	
  from	
  a	
  diversity	
  of	
  departments	
  on	
  campus	
  and	
  
acquire	
  practical	
  experience	
  in	
  institutional	
  sustainability	
  and	
  waste	
  management.

The	
  intern	
  will	
  report	
  to	
  Terri	
  Ramirez,	
  IWM,	
  Recycling,	
  and	
  Moving	
  Services	
  Specialist	
  with	
  
Facilities,	
  Development,	
  and	
  Operations.	
  	
  Your	
  main	
  responsibilities	
  will	
  include:	
  
-­‐	
  	
  	
  	
  	
  	
  	
  	
  Assist	
  in	
  the	
  implementation	
  of	
  a	
  waste	
  diversion	
  protocol	
  for	
  campus	
  events;	
  
-­‐	
  	
  	
  	
  	
  	
  	
  	
  Help	
  publicize	
  composting	
  and	
  recycling	
  services	
  to	
  campus	
  event	
  organizers;	
  
-­‐	
  	
  	
  	
  	
  	
  	
  	
  Maintain	
  a	
  schedule	
  of	
  campus	
  events	
  that	
  request	
  compost	
  and	
  recycling	
  bins;	
  	
  
-­‐	
  	
  	
  	
  	
  	
  	
  	
  Identify,	
  recruit,	
  and	
  train	
  student	
  organizations	
  to	
  staff	
  waste	
  diversion	
  stations	
  at	
  events;

  Monitor	
  and	
  track	
  the	
  amount	
  of	
  waste,	
  compost	
  and	
  recycling

  setup,	
  emptying,	
  monitoring,	
  pickup	
  and

  for	
  meetings,	
  events,	
  convocations,	
  athletic	
  events,	
  etc.	
  

Course	
  Credit	
  
This	
  is	
  an	
  unpaid	
  internship.	
  Students	
  may	
  obtain	
  3	
  units	
  of	
  internship	
  course	
  credit	
  by	
  taking	
  
ENVS	
  194	
  for	
  undergraduates	
  and	
  ENVS	
  285	
  for	
  graduate	
  students.	
  Course	
  credit	
  through	
  other	
  
departments	
  may	
  be	
  possible,	
  and	
  would	
  be	
  at	
  the	
  discretion	
  of	
  your	
  department	
  chair.	
  	
  The	
  
intern	
  would	
  be	
  expected	
  to	
  work	
  for	
  150	
  hours	
  on	
  these	
  projects	
  over	
  the	
  course	
  the	
  Fall	
  2010	
  
semester.

Composting  &  Recycling  Services  Intern  -­‐  FD&O       San  Jose  State  University,  Spring  2011     Are  you  passionate  about  recycling?    Would  you  be  delighted  to  have  a  place  to  compost  your   coffee  cup  on  campus?      If  so,  come  and  join  the  Facilities,  Development  and  Operations   Department  this  semester  as  a  Composting  &  Recycling  Services  intern! Responsibilities   Through  this  internship  you  will  gain  valuable  experience  by  assisting  in  the  continued   development  of  composting  guidelines  and  their  implementation  for  the  SJSU  campus.      You  will   learn  to  engage  individuals  and  groups  in  meaningful  ways  about  how  and  why  to  compost.  You   will  also  have  the  opportunity  to  meet  people  from  a  diversity  of  departments  on  campus  and   acquire  practical  experience  in  institutional  sustainability  and  waste  management. The  intern  will  report  to  Terri  Ramirez,  IWM,  Recycling,  and  Moving  Services  Specialist  with   Facilities,  Development,  and  Operations.    Your  main  responsibilities  will  include:   -­‐                Assist  in  the  implementation  of  a  waste  diversion  protocol  for  campus  events;   -­‐                Help  publicize  composting  and  recycling  services  to  campus  event  organizers;   -­‐                Maintain  a  schedule  of  campus  events  that  request  compost  and  recycling  bins;     -­‐                Identify,  recruit,  and  train  student  organizations  to  staff  waste  diversion  stations  at  events;     -­‐                Monitor  and  track  the  amount  of  waste,  compost  and  recycling  generated  at  events;  and   -­‐                Assist  with  the  delivery,  setup,  emptying,  monitoring,  pickup  and  return  of  temporary                      compost  and  recycling  bins  for  meetings,  events,  convocations,  athletic  events,  etc.   Course  Credit   This  is  an  unpaid  internship.  Students  may  obtain  3  units  of  internship  course  credit  by  taking   ENVS  194  for  undergraduates  and  ENVS  285  for  graduate  students.  Course  credit  through  other   departments  may  be  possible,  and  would  be  at  the  discretion  of  your  department  chair.    The   intern  would  be  expected  to  work  for  150  hours  on  these  projects  over  the  course  the  Fall  2010   semester.  Note:  You  may  be  asked  to  staff  some  events  occurring  after  normal  business  hours.
