You’ve learned that a complex sentence consists of
two clauses joined by a subordinating connective.
Complex sentence
The birds ate all the food before they took off.
Main clause connective subordinate clause
What will be happen if we place the subordinate clause first?
Will actually nothing much will happen except we add the
comma after the subordinate clause.
Before they took off, the birds ate all the food

Rule 1: add comma after the subordinate clause when it comes first.
Rule 2: add a comma after the introductory word or phrase.
Examples:
-Hello, what’s your name?
- Once upon a time, there was an old man living with his son.
