11. ‘Significant change in teachers attitudes and beliefs
occurs primarily after they gain evidence of
improvements in student learning. These improvements
typically result from changes that teachers have made
in their classroom practices.’
Thomas Guskey, Evaluating Professional Development, p. 139
The last decade has seen a vast array of initiatives promoting the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in primary school classrooms. Countless professional development days have been facilitated, grants provided and numerous government strategies rolled out. Despite this proliferation of opportunities, the majority of teachers in the primary years of schooling are still not effectively or sustainably utilising ICT in the classroom. To meet the needs of the digital generation we require classroom teachers who are confident and effective facilitators of digital technologies. Join Louise to explore some effective strategies for adult learning that aim to develop teachers who can:demonstrate competence in using ICT in authentic situationsdemonstrate an understanding of what they are doing and whydemonstrate an ability to adapt to unknown issues and situations and explain the reasons behind adaptation.

From website: For any Situation, there are known and unknown situations. Similarly there are known and unknown Problems. Our ability to deal with Known Problems in Known Situations is reflected in out Competency. When we are presented with an Unknown Problem in an Unknown Situation, it is our abilities that assist us. This is our Capability. The problem is that Capability is both hard to define and hard to measure. Many in industry want be able to put a "tick in the box" when it comes to a persons abilities. This usually results in competencies being essential. Like Karl, I feel Capability is under-valued due to the difficulty in measuring it.
