Incidence of Glaucoma & Diabetic Retinopathy in Patients with Diabetes Mellit...QUESTJOURNAL
Background: Vision is a means of communication of man with the external world. The impact of visual loss due to various ocular morbidities has profound implications for the person affected and the society as a whole. Diabetes has become one of the world’s most important public health problems & WHO indicate that 19% of world’s diabetic population lives in India. Diabetes related microvascular complications cause visual disability even in younger age group individuals. Aim: To estimate the magnitude of Glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy in diabetic patients in our institution. To create awareness about avoidable blindness in diabetic patients. To enlighten and thereby motivate the patient for further evaluation and follow up. Materials and methods: The study is a hospital- based , non- interventional, cross-sectional study. The ocular disorders are evaluated in 500 consecutive diabetic patients attending ophthalmology out patient department of Kanyakumari medical college hospital. Estimation of visual acuity, slit lamp examination, intraocular pressure, retinoscopy & fundus examination, visual field analysis , gonioscopy are done to detail the defective vision. Result analysis Data is analysed using SPSS. The common manifestations are cataract- 346 (69%), diabetic retinopathy- 94 patients (18.8%), glaucoma– 34 (6.8%). Patients with cataract are well managed by cataract extraction techniques. Prime importance is to create awareness and also diagnose the early changes of retinopathy and glaucoma.Treatment of glaucoma if instituted early will go a long way in preventing avoidable blindness Therefore periodic visual screening along with control of hyperglycemia and associated risk factors is needed to ensure good quality of vision.

This study evaluated myopia as a risk factor for glaucoma by examining 200 eyes of 100 patients with myopia. The study found that 18% of eyes had established glaucoma, while 84% showed suspicious optic disc changes. A majority (46%) of eyes had intraocular pressures in the higher teens, and 10% had pressures over 21 mmHg. High myopes were more likely to have pressures over 21 mmHg (60% of high myopes). While most eyes had open anterior chamber angles, myopic females had a higher prevalence of glaucoma (25%) than myopic males (11.54%). The study confirms that myopia is a risk factor for glaucoma, with primary open-angle

Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is the world’s leading cause of maternal death and accounts for an estimated 127,000 deaths each year. Identification of some of the risk factors such as; previous postpartum haemorrhage, multiple pregnancies, macrosomia, induction of labour, operative vaginal deliveries and cesarean section would help in preventing PPH. The aim of this research was to assess the factors contributing to postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) among pregnant women who attend delivery services in Kampala International University Teaching Hospital (KIU-TH). This study used a cross-sectional descriptive design where by a cross-section of respondents involving 68 respondents were sampled to represent the target population, in these case women who received maternity service from KIU-TH. Only quantitative methods of data collection using questionnaires with closed ended questions were employed for both mothers and health workers. During the study period, 58 women who delivered in the unit and 20 women developed postpartum haemorrhage giving the frequency of postpartum haemorrhage 34.6%. The majority of the women 30% were between 30-34 years of age. Among the women who developed PPH retained placental tissues was the most common cause 50% followed by uterine atony which was 30%. The rest of the causes of PPH were laceration 20%. Postpartum haemorrhage is still a leading but preventable cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in our country due to underutilization of health facilities, the major cause is retained placental tissues followed by uterine atony.

1. A survey was conducted of 120 students, teachers, and workers in the Optometry lab of Paramedical College in Saifai, Etawah, India to determine the prevalence of computer vision syndrome (CVS) and its major symptoms.
2. The results found that 63 out of 120 subjects (52.5%) suffered from CVS. The most common symptoms were headache (24%), watery eyes (15%), and neck pain (11%).
3. The highest number of CVS cases (27, or 22.5% of total) were in the 16-20 year old age group, likely due to greater time spent on social media and improper posture while using devices.
This study examined the prevalence of eye disorders in 5918 children aged 5-16 in Dehradun, India. The highest rates of ocular morbidity were found in children under 10 years of age (6.48%), decreasing to 4.4% in older children. No significant relationship was found between sex and eye disorders. The most common cause of visual impairment was refractive errors. The study concludes effective vision screening in schools can help detect correctable issues like refractive errors and minimize long-term visual disability.

This document provides background information on developing a preliminary diagnostic system for endocrine diseases. It discusses diabetes and thyroid disorders, which can cause nail discoloration, brittleness, and other changes. Previous research has found glycated keratin in fingernails can indicate tissue damage in diabetic patients. The objectives of this study are to design a prototype diagnostic system that captures fingernail images and temperature, analyzes for possible diabetes or thyroidism, and prints/emails results. The scope is limited to these two diseases and depends on severity levels for accuracy.
Should Astigmatism be Corrected until the Age of Three? Results of a Six-year...inventionjournals
The state of refraction in young children is important to be examined in order to prevent different eye diseases (amblyopia, strabismus, hordeolosis, blepharitis etc.). Part of these diseases may interfere with the normal development of a child, as well as they may affect the process of socialization. AIM: The aim of this study is to determine and follow-up aspheric refraction dynamics in children up to age three. Patients and Methods: The study covers 324 children (648 eyes) from Sofia city and Sofia district (Bulgaria), aged between 6 and 12 months at their first visit and refraction examination. 159 of them are girls (318 eyes) and 165- boys (330 eyes). The children are followed up in time. They are grouped in four age groups and divided by gender. The methods used are: photorefractometry with PlusoptiX S04; cycloplegia, retinoscopy and optical correction if needed; statistics. Results: Astigmatism changes with age (towards reducing); Diopters of astigmatism are most decreased in age between 12 and 18 months; There is no statistically significant difference in aspheric refraction between genders. Conclusion: PlusoptiX S04 photorefractometer is operational for children aged at least 5 months. This is a quite accurate method for determining the aspheric refraction in children without cycloplegia. It allows us to state that astigmatism reduces considerably with age
The importance of sex and gender in medical researchCoda Change
The importance of sex and gender in medical research.
For many years it was widely assumed that the occurrence and outcome of disease was the same for women and men.
Our understanding was that studies involving only men would be equally relevant for women. In the last two decades however, it has been shown that this assumption is highly prejudice and can have a detrimental impact on the health of women.
It is, therefore, really important to incorporate a sex and gender research lens in to medical research.
First, Kelly makes the important distinction between sex and gender and how this can impact medical diagnosis, treatment and outcomes.
Then, she identifies how the incorporation of sex and gender into research has allowed for advancements across healthcare. Improved accuracy, avoiding misinterpretation, reduced unintentional bias and greater social equity to name a few.
In this presentation, Kelly Thompson refers to case studies to examine the differences in the interpretation of health data when examining through a sex and gender research lens.
The severity of disease, risk factors and treatment effectiveness are just a few of the reasons why this is so important.
Kelly encourages researchers to ensure gender diversity in the research team and to explain how sex and gender are accounted for in research applications moving forward.
From CodaZero Live, tune into this fascinating discussion on the importance of sex and gender in medical research by Kelly Thompson.

This document discusses various study designs used in medical research. It describes descriptive study designs like case reports, case series, ecological studies, and cross-sectional studies which are used to describe characteristics of subjects. It also describes analytical study designs like case-control studies and cohort studies which are used to analyze associations between exposures and outcomes. Experimental study designs like randomized controlled trials are also discussed which are used to evaluate interventions. Key aspects of each study design like their strengths, weaknesses and steps are highlighted.
When you or your child has an eye turn all too often the first recommendation for intervention is surgery. You should know the outcomes, risks and complications associated with this surgical procedure and alternative ways to manage these problems.
This study analyzed 558 Pap smear reports from women ages 20-70 who presented to a gynecology clinic in Bangladesh from 2015-2016. Most women (70.2%) presented with chronic white discharge and itching. The majority (92.4%) of Pap smears showed inflammatory changes. Premalignant lesions were found in 3.7% of smears, including low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL) in 3% and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) in 0.7%. Suggestive of squamous cell carcinoma was seen in 0.7% of smears. The study concludes that Pap smear screening can effectively detect premalign

This document summarizes an interview on a study examining the effectiveness of state strategies for increasing organ donations. The main findings were that states have implemented many creative strategies but they have had almost no effect on donation or transplantation rates. The only strategy found to have a small positive effect was dedicating state revenue to organ donation activities. Clinicians and patients should take away that new strategies are needed to address the ongoing organ shortage.

This document provides an overview of pain theories and the Gate Control Theory of pain modulation. It defines pain and classifies types of pain fibers and pain. Several historical theories of pain are outlined. The bulk of the document focuses on explaining the Gate Control Theory proposed by Melzack and Wall in 1965. This theory proposes that a gating mechanism in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord regulates whether painful stimuli are transmitted to the brain based on the interaction of small and large nerve fibers and inhibitory interneurons. When the gate is open due to greater small fiber activity, pain signals pass through, while somatosensory input closes the gate.

The document outlines several theories of learning and development:
- Behaviorism focuses on external stimuli and conditioning, disregarding innate factors. Key theorists included Pavlov, Watson, and Skinner.
- Innate Theory, proposed by Chomsky, posits that humans are born with an innate capacity and "language acquisition device" for learning language.
- Cognitive Theory incorporates internal mental processes and sees learning as involving effort, aptitude and intelligence. Piaget, Gardner and Bloom contributed to this view.
- Social Development Theory, from Vygotsky, emphasizes social interaction and culture as shaping development through tools like language.
- Constructivism views learning as an active process where learners construct their own understandings by
Postural back pain is a common complaint during pregnancy, affecting 50-70% of pregnant females, and can continue after delivery for up to 12 months. It is caused by postural changes due to pregnancy, ligamentous laxity from hormonal changes, and decreased abdominal muscle function. Traditional exercises, proper body mechanics, posture instruction, improving work techniques, and superficial modalities can help intervene, while deep heating, electrical stimulation, and traction are contraindicated.

Here is the summary of hypotension:
Hypotension, or low blood pressure, is when the pressure of blood circulating in the body is lower than normal or expected. It's only a problem if it negatively impacts the body and causes symptoms. Normal blood pressure is usually between 90/60 mmHg and 120/80 mmHg, but pressures below 90/60 are generally considered hypotensive.

3. INTRODUCTION
Dry eye is a multifactorial disease of ocular surface which
causes Discomfort, Visual disturbance and tear film
instability with potential damage to ocular surface.
Tear film consist of three layer:
•Outer most lipid layer secreted by meibomian gland.
•Middle watery layer secreted by lacrimal gland.
•Inner most mucin layer secreted by goblet cells of
conjunctiva.
3
4. Dry eye can develop from many reasons in both males and females
such as
•Aging
•Medication
•Excessive computer usage
•Meibomian gland dysfunction
•Sjogren syndrome
•Autoimmune diseases
But women are more likely to develop the condition and one of the
reasons is Menopause caused by hormonal changes in them. It is a
natural process that occurs in women’s life after age 45 when her
period stops.
5. CONTINUED
Symptoms of DED include:
•Burning
•itching
•Foreign body sensation
• Decreased vision
•Sensitivity to light
•Eye redness
•Complexity wearing contact lens
•Complexity with driving at night time
•Blurry vision
•Tired eyes
•Watery eye
6. •To live with dry eye symptoms provoke feelings such as distress,
frustration and awkwardness.
•Sex hormones such as Estrogens are believed to causes dry eye
while Androgens help in maintaining structure and function of
meibomian and lacrimal glands, therefore androgen deficiency
plays a role in etiology of dry eye.
•In the pathophysiology of dry eye disease, low androgens levels
are most consistent hormonal factor.
7. •If left untreated it can cause conjunctival scarring or corneal
complications in later stages.
• In addition filamentary keratitis, ulceration or even corneal
perforation can cause serious complications
•So it is very necessary to find the relationship between
menopause and dry eye.
8. LITERATURE REVIEW
Jeena Gurung et, al. conducted a study From
April 2017 to March 2018 :
It was found that (66%) of postmenopausal
women had dry eye. Among them, from the
OSDI scoring system, 26% had reasonable dry
eye, 19% had strict dry eye as well as 21% had
mild dry eye
8
9. LITERATURE REVIEW
A study examined 1508 individuals having age
more than 50 years by Enrique O Graue-Hernandez
et, al in 2018.
the aim of this study was to determine the
prevalence of dry eye symptoms
They concluded that Prevalence of Dry eye syndrome is
high and associated with menopause, gender, smoking
and hypertension medication.
9
10. In 2018, cross sectional descriptive study was conducted by Dr. Surabhi
Beniwal et al on occurrence of Dry eye in premenopausal as well as
postmenopausal women.
Study population consist 75 premenopausal and 75 postmenopausal
women.
Results showed that:
Out of 75 postmenopausal women examined, 31 patients (41.33%) had
dry eye
Out of 75 premenopausal examined, 3 patients (4%) had dry eye.
According to the severity of dry eyes, commonness of mild dry eyes was
greatest (21.33%) and harsh dry eye was smallest amount (8%).
11. Literature Review:
A study was conducted by Travis peck et al in june
2017:
• Aim of study was to check role of sex hormones in dry
eye disease (DED) on post-menopausal women. .
• They concluded that alteration of sex hormone plays an
important role in pathophysiology of dry eye disease in
premenopausal and menopausal group
12. Cronellius Gananduraj et, al. performed a investigation in 2019
on 200 post menopausal women.
Modification of sex hormones played significant role in
pathophysiology of DED in premenopausal as well as
menopausal age group.
They concluded that the occurrence of dry eye in post-
menopausal women was 52%.It was establish that the
occurrence of dry eye rises with age from 26.8 % (50-54 years)
to 85.7% (>70years).
14. OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS
Tear film:
Tear film is unique thin fluid layer of approximately 3micro meter thick and 3
micro liter in volume that covers the outer mucosal surfaces of the eye. As such
it is the interface of the ocular surface with the environment.
Dry eyes:
Dry eye disease is a common condition that occurs when your tears are not able
to provide adequate lubrication for your eyes. Tears can be inadequate and
unstable for many reasons. For example dry eyes may occur if you don’t
produce enough tears or if you produce poor-quality tears.
Menopause:
It is the time in a woman’s life when her periods stop. It usually occurs naturally,
most often after age 45. Menopause happens because the woman’s ovaries stop
producing the hormones estrogen and progesterone. a woman has reached
menopause when she has not had a period for one year.
15. Premenopause:
Premenopause is when you have no symptoms of
menopause. You still have periods, whether they are regular
or irregular and are considered to be in your reproductive
years. Some hormonal changes maybe occurring, but there
are no noticeable changes in your body.
Postmenopause:
This is the name given to the period of time after a woman
has not bled for an entire year (the rest of your life after
going through menopause). During this stage, menopausal
symptoms, such as hot flashes may ease for many women

30. DISCUSSION
Dry eye disease affect the eye health and vision in pre and post
menopausal women.
Present study do not represent the true frequency of Dry eye
diseases seen in the community.
There may be many more patients in the community with Dry
eye disease who may not have overt eye symptoms, hence do not
present to the hospital.
But this study may provide some useful information on the
frequency of Dry eye diseases in pre and post menopausal
women.
31. CONTINUED
In previous similar study by coates Cf et al, post-menopausal
women were examined to find out the frequency of dry eyes.
Different ocular surface test such as Schirmer test with
anesthetic drops and corneal staining was performed on post-
menopausal women of different age groups. Results showed that
1/3 postmenopausal patient had dry eye.
Similarly to our study it has been shown that there is high rate of
dry eye in post-menopausal females due to significantly
decrease in tear film production
32. • A Comparative Research was conducted by Dr surabhi
Benewal et al between pre as well as post-menopausal
women to evaluate the DED.
• Between two groups different tests were performed such
as schirmer test, tear breakup time test and OSDI.
• Results showed that out of 75 postmenopausal women,
31 patients (41.33%) had dry eye and out of 75
premenopausal examined, 3 patients (4%) had dry eye
Similar to results of our research the results of this showed
that post-menopausal women have more prevalence of dry
eye.
33. CONTINUED…
Pascual Garcia-Alfaro et, al. examined 1,947
women between October 2018 and January 2019
in NYC on a group of pre and post menopausal
women.
The authors concluded that 64% of pre and post-
menopausal women had OSD symptoms. OSD
symptoms and age, postmenopausal and earlier
age at menopause were correlated, which were
associated with increased prevalence.
34. CONTINUE
Cross sectional descriptive study was conducted by Dr
AbdulKadir Turgut et, al. on Effect of menopause in Turkey in
2017.
In this study, 54 premenopausal and 54 postmenopausal
women participated.
Similar to our study they concluded that the hormonal
abnormalities related with age lead to dry eye symptoms,
central corneal thinning particularly in postmenopausal
women.
35. In the present study, no association was found
between age and the frequency of refractive
error. In this respect, results of this study were
similar with Ezinne who have reported that
age and the frequency of refractive errors
have no association.
36. CONCLUSION
Diagnosing Dry eye diseases will increase the
awareness of the need for treatment, support
and encourage adherence to medication.
New and innovative Strategies are required to
assess and diagnose these ocular surface
diseases and to establish early treatment
resulting in decreasing the Dry eye disease
burden.
