Carol Ann Duffy is a British poet, playwright and freelance writer born in 1955 in Glasgow, Scotland. She was raised Catholic in Staffordshire and showed an early talent for writing, being encouraged by a teacher at her convent school. Duffy studied philosophy at university and first worked in television before becoming a full-time writer in 1985. She is a prolific poet who has published several collections of poetry and written for children. Duffy's poems often use dramatic monologue to give voice to various contemporary characters and explore themes of time, change, and loss. Though she lost out on being named Poet Laureate in 1999, Duffy has received many awards for her work and remains a popular and respected poet.

Compare and contrast out of the blue and futility

- 2. In out of the blue, there are certain sayings or sentences indicating his disbelief of the situation. In stanza 5 he says “A bird goes by. The depth is appalling”. This shows his sudden realisation of how high he is and the fact that sooner or later, he will have to jump. Again in stanza 5, he says “ Appalling that others like me should be wind-milling, wheeling, spiralling, falling.” this shows his perseverance in the situation, that he’s not ready to give up like so many others have.
- 3. In the poem Futility conflict is shown through interpretation as an inner conflict structure shows. The demand “ Think “ and “ move him “ is direct address to the reader which causes a personal effect directed at the reader. The inner conflict structure could show a lack of importance or contain a sense of confusion and grief.
- 4. In out of the blue, he describes the attack in such an inhumane and vicious way, the last thing anybody would think of was nature, which is usually associated with fragile and beautiful objects
- 5. Throughout the poem, Owen used a lot of nature in his writing and referred his friend to the sun. he said things like “think how it wakes the seeds, once woke the clays of a cold star” this proves his desperation before belief, ending with “ Was it for this the clay grew tall?” When reading this poem, you cant help but feel like nature is claiming itself back after all the years of destruction.
