COMMON HAND & WRIST INJURIES IN ATHLETE’S
• Approximately 25 % of all sports-related injuries.
• Incidence is growing - Competitive level in high school, collegiate athletes & also
due to the increase in activity level of the general population.
• Hand and wrist injuries in Athletes - significant impact - initial delay in treatment -
jeopardize professional aspirations.
• Knowledge of common sports-related injuries - can help the trainers effectively
guide their trainees considering early care & return to sports.
Common Wrist Injuries
Radial sided- Wrist Injuries
1. Scaphoid fracture
 Scaphoid is the most commonly fractured carpal bone –high incidence in college football players.
 increasing incidence in female athletes.
• Presentation - Mild swelling - disabling wrist pain and decreased wrist movements.
Remote history of a wrist sprain – Late presentation as nonunion
Tenderness in the anatomical snuff box, Axial loading of the thumb, Pincer grasp.
• X-ray -
MRI Scan -
Late presented / Neglected cases
X-ray MRI
SNAC WRIST
Radial Styloid fracture
Tendinopathies – Dequervains Tenosynovitis
FCR Tendinitis
Repetitive wrist flexion or acute overstretching of the
wrist as can be seen in volleyball or water polo
• Immobilization, stretching techniques, ice pack, and
nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication
• Corticosteroid injections
• When recalcitrant to conservative measures, surgical
release of the respective tunnel.
CENTRAL WRIST PAIN
• Wrist instability commonly occurs in a spectrum of severity in hyperextension injuries.
• Contact sports such as football or rugby commonly place the athlete in a position of impact with
hyperextension, ulnar deviation, and supination of the wrist that can lead to these injuries.

DORSAL WRIST GANGLION
ULNAR SIDED WRIST PAIN
Black Box Of Wrist / Low Back Ache Of Wrist
TFCC INJURY
• Athletes who grip and rotate baseball bats, racquets or golf clubs, Weight lifters.
• TFCC can occur with hyperextension and pronation of the axially loaded, ulnar
deviated wrist.
• Micro-or repetitive trauma can cause peripheral tears tothe TFCC with rapid
supination-pronation of the ulnardeviated wrist
ULNOCARPAL ABUTMENT
HOOK OF HAMATE FRACTURE
• Direct blows from a golf club with the ground or from a baseball bat while “checking” a swing can
result in hook of the hamate fractures.
ECU TENDINITIS ECU RUPTURE SNAPPING ECU
• Golf, baseball, hockey, tennis players, and other racquet sports. Injury may present as acute or
chronic tendinosis, subluxation, dislocation, or rupture causing pain on the ulnar side of the wrist.
COMMON HAND PROBLEMS IN ATHLETES
• THUMB UCL INJURY - skiing, basketball, and football. Injury occur - fall onto an outstretched hand with the
thumb abducted.
• An acute thumb UCL injury has been dubbed a skier’s thumb,
• Chronic attritional insufficiency of the ligament which is referred to as a gamekeeper’s thumb.
HAND FRACTURES
• 10 % of all fractures presenting to the emergency
department.
• Metacarpal and Phalangeal fractures are common
injuries.
• Injuries occur from falls, direct blows, or crush
during sporting activity
• Incidence is highest in contact sports such as
football, lacrosse, and hockey.
