This document outlines a workshop on effective communication skills. The objectives are to define communication, understand the communication process, overcome barriers, practice active listening, and improve verbal and non-verbal skills. Communication is defined as transmitting information from one person to another through meaningful interaction. The most common forms of communication are spoken word, written word, visual images, and body language. Communication can be downward, upward, or lateral between colleagues. Barriers include noise, inappropriate medium, assumptions, emotions, language differences, and poor listening. While hearing is passive, listening is an active skill that requires choosing to participate. Good listening improves performance, eliminates grievances, and aids social relations and conversations. Het lijkt te gek voor woorden maar minister Jambon bevestigde in De Kamer onlangs dat foreign terrorist fighters (FTF’s) – die dus per definitie terroristen zijn – medische verzorging in ons land kregen. In 4 gevallen werd die verzorging zelfs in het ziekenhuis uitgevoerd.
Minister Jambon: ‘Tot op heden (23/12/16) ontvingen vijf à tien personen enige vorm van medische zorg na terugkeer. Vier daarvan ontvingen zorgen in een ziekenhuis.’
Het is eigenlijk een beetje cynisch dat de minister vermeldt dat er ‘geen incidenten in de ziekenhuizen
gemeld werden’. Het is zoals een pyromaan die stelt dat er toch niets gebeurd is nadat hij een brandende lucifer naar een brandversneller heeft gegooid.
Jambon onderlijnt verder dat het inderdaad ‘niet kan dat een FTF onterecht gebruik zou kunnen maken van de sociale rechten’. En terecht?
Tot slot is het verontrustend dat er ‘5 tot 10 personen’ medische zorgen kregen. Het exacte aantal foreign terrorist fighters die verzorging kregen, is dus niet gekend.

Infrared thermography (IR/T) as a condition monitoring technique is used to remotely gather thermal information for monitoring the condition of virtually all of the electrical components on an entire system and from generation to end user. When equipments operating under regular conditions, has a normal operating thermal signature which is typical of the specific component being inspected. Infrared thermography presents this normal signature or baseline to us. Once the baseline is established, IR/T will reveal the thermal variances deviating from the norm this localized thermal deviation can either be caused by an overheated condition or absence of heat. The information is reviewed and decisions are made for repair or to plot the temperature change over time and repair the component at a more opportune time. The information can be stored and fully analyzed at a later date providing complete computer aided predictive maintenance capabilities and trending.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Downwards Communication : Highly Directive, from Senior to subordinates, to
assign duties, give instructions, to inform to offer feed
back, approval to highlight problems etc.
Upwards Communications : It is non directive in nature from down below, to give
feedback, to inform about progress/problems, seeking
approvals.
Lateral or Horizontal
Communication : Among colleagues, peers at same level for information
level for information sharing for coordination, to save time.
In modern business environment communication extends beyond written or spoken
words to listened word.
Visual dimension added by T.V., computers has given to new meaning to
communication.
COMMUNICATION NETWORKS
Formal Network : Virtually vertical as per chain go command within the
hierarchy.

11. Always think ahead about what you are going to say.
Use simple words and phrases that are understood by every body.
Increase your knowledge on all subjects you are required to speak.
Speak clearly and audibly.
Check twice with the listener whether you have been understood accurately or not
In case of an interruption, always do a little recap of what has been already said.
Always pay undivided attention to the speaker while listening.
While listening, always make notes of important points.
Always ask for clarification if you have failed to grasp other’s point of view.
Repeat what the speaker has said to check whether you have understood accurately.
