This document outlines a workshop on effective communication skills. The objectives are to define communication, understand the communication process, overcome barriers, practice active listening, and improve verbal and non-verbal skills. Communication is defined as transmitting information from one person to another through meaningful interaction. The most common forms of communication are spoken word, written word, visual images, and body language. Communication can be downward, upward, or lateral between colleagues. Barriers include noise, inappropriate medium, assumptions, emotions, language differences, and poor listening. While hearing is passive, listening is an active skill that requires choosing to participate. Good listening improves performance, eliminates grievances, and aids social relations and conversations.
