Prof. Fred Magdoff gave a keynote address to the Commission 13 Workshop about the underlying causes of the ecological crisis. He argues that the capitalist economic system, with its sole focus on profit accumulation, is driving resource exploitation, overconsumption, pollution and climate change. A new system is needed that values environmental and social justice over profits and places control of the economy in the hands of workers and communities to meet basic human needs for all in a sustainable way.
Capitalist delusion and climate drift 1GRAZIA TANTA
Around the mid-nineteenth century Marx said that philosophers had hitherto endeavoured to understand the world; and that it was time to transform it. Seventeen decades later, this idea screams in our ears.
Put in another way: there is no solution to environmental problems within the capitalist model
1 – Introduction
2 – Environmental management by capitalists and their employees
3 – Climate change - causes and effects
a) Ineluctable absence of human interference cases
b) Historical and current impacts of capitalist development
c) Environmental management as done by multinationals and their employees
A presentation given to the Conference of INGOs committee for Democracy, Social Cohesion and Global Challenges on the significance of climate change as one of the complex factors affecting migration.
The conclusion suggests that climat change is a critical factor in all aspects of the work that the Council of Europe is involved in and that environmental issues - especially sustainable development - should be a top priority for its future work
In a presentation given at the School of Economic Science’s annual colloquium, STWR outlined why the principle of sharing – as practiced in families and communities since the dawn of civilisation – should be placed at the forefront of policymaking in order to address the social, environmental and security crises that humanity now faces. Climate Refugees: Uncertainty and InsecurityJosh Gellers
This lecture presents the precarious state of climate refugees, whose status is not defined under current international law. It examines several case studies (Syria, Tuvalu, and Kivalina) in which populations are on the move or are under imminent danger as a result, directly or indirectly, of climate change. The presentation also evaluates several possible solutions devised by legal scholars and political scientists to address to what many regard as an impending crisis.

Planet Earth faces the highest extinction rate since we lost dinosaurs more than 60 million years ago thanks to actions predatory forces promoted by capitalism from the 1st Industrial Revolution in the seventeenth century to the present. Climate change, deforestation, unsustainable agriculture, pollution and the use of pesticides are some of the human causes of declining biodiversity.

Change doesn't happen by accident. Change takes time, dedication, and most importantly, it takes leaders. The climate crisis can be solved, but only if each of us do our part. Let’s raise our voice - sasrai ONLY THE PATH TO SAVE MOTHER PLANET EARTH, NATURE. It’s only the path to Eliminate Racial Discrimination - End violence against WOMEN and CHILDREN. sasrai only the path to end POVERTY, VULNERABILITY, HUNGER, DISASTER, CLIMATE Threat. Each second, minute, hour day needed to be spent considering earth, environment and humanity. We must get each child caring to each particle of food and resources. Wish the Peace, Justice, Dignity and Rights for all - save a bit, reserve, preserve, rejuvenate and conserve resources.
Climate change threatens our planet, the world economy, and our lives -- and it will impact young people the most. It's only fair that they get a chance to demand answers and action from the leaders who are responsible for protecting their future.

l̂̂̂ î;The environmental revolution has been almost.docxSHIVA101531
l̂̂̂ î;
The environmental revolution has been almost
three decades in the making, and it has changed for-
ever how companies do business. In the 1960s and
1970s, corporations were in a state of denial regard-
ing their impact on the environment. Then a series
of highly visible ecological problems created a
groundswell of support for strict government regu-
lation. In the United States, Lake Erie was dead. In
Europe, the Rhine was on fire. In Japan, people were
dying of mercury poisoning.
Today many companies have accepted their re-
sponsibility to do no harm to the environment.
Products and production processes are becoming
cleaner; and where sueh change is under way, the
environment is on the mend. In the industrialized
nations, more and more companies are "going
green" as they realize that they can reduce pollu-
tion and increase profits simultaneously. We have
come a long way.
fer to as its carrying capacity. Increasingly, the
scourges of the late twentieth century-depleted
farmland, fisheries, and forests,- choking urban pol-
lution,- poverty; infectious disease; and migration-
are spilling over geopolitical borders. The simple
fact is this: in meeting our needs, we are destroying
the ability of future generations to meet theirs.
The roots of the problem-explosive population
growth and rapid economic development in the
emerging economies - are political and social issues
that exceed the mandate and the capabilities of any
corporation. At the same time, corporations are the
only organizations with the resources, the technol-
ogy, the global reach, and, ultimately, the motiva-
tion to achieve sustainability.
It is easy to state the case in the negative: faced
with impoverished customers, degraded environ-
ments, failing political systems, and unraveling
societies, it will be increasingly difficult for cor-
Strateqies for a Sustainable World
But the distance we've traveled will seem small
when, in 30 years, we look hack at the 1990s. Be-
yond greening lies an enormous challenge-and an
enormous opportunity. The challenge is to develop
a sustainable global economy: an economy that the
planet is capable of supporting indefinitely. Al-
though we may be approaching ecological recovery
in the developed world, the planet as a whole re-
mains on an unsustainable course. Those who
think that sustainability is only a matter of pollu-
tion control are missing the bigger picture. Even if
all the companies in the developed world were to
achieve zero emissions by the year 2000, the earth
would still be stressed beyond what biologists re-
porations to do business. But the positive case is
even more powerful. The more we learn about the
challenges of sustainability, the clearer it is that we
are poised at the threshold of a historic moment
in which many of the world's industries may be
transformed.
To date, the business logic for greening has been
largely operational or technical: bottom-up pollu-
tion-prevention programs have saved companies

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

2. A Message to the Commission
13 Workshop
Prof. Fred Magdoff
Professor Emeritus of Plant and Soil
Science, University of Vermont
Adjunct Professor of Crop and Soil
Science, Cornell University
November 7, 2015
4. AMessage to the Commission 13
Workshop
I wish that I could be with you today at
your conference. But rest assured that I
am one of many, many people—including
within the United States—that are
concerned with the ecological crisis and
its effects, especially on the poor. As with
all social and ecological problems, it is the
poor that are most vulnerable and suffer
the most.
Prof. Fred Magdoff
5. What is called the “ecological crisis”
actually consists of many crises—global
climate change, air pollution, ocean
acidification, accelerated extinction of
animal and plant species, chemical/toxin
pollution of water and soil, humans, and
most other organisms —but all have the
same underlying cause
AMessage to the Commission 13
Workshop
Prof. Fred Magdoff
6. The problem is not too many people in
the world, it is not that humans are
inherently destructive or just don’t care, it
is not because of some philosophy that
people follow, and it is not because
individuals are making incorrect decisions
about what to purchase.
AMessage to the Commission 13
Workshop
Prof. Fred Magdoff
7. The underlying cause of the ecological
crisis—that is occurring on local, regional,
and global scales—is the capitalist
economic system. This system has only
one goal: for individual capitalists to
accumulate profits. In its pursuit of
profits, businesses as are impelled to
grow and are impelled to sell more and
more.
AMessage to the Commission 13
Workshop
Prof. Fred Magdoff
8. It is capitalists’ (and top managers’) greed
for ever-increasing wealth that drives the
system. In order to make such a system
function in a wealthy country like the
United States, massive amounts of
resources are used to convince people to
purchase more and more goods and
services.
AMessage to the Commission 13
Workshop
Prof. Fred Magdoff
9. Colonial and imperial wars are an integral
part of capitalism—from the early
conquests and plundering of nations of
the South to the current wars in the
Middle East. In addition to the direct and
indirect slaughter of literally millions of
people, these ventures have also caused
ecological havoc.
AMessage to the Commission 13
Workshop
Prof. Fred Magdoff
10. Resources, including agricultural land,
continue to be plundered from around
the world, with adverse effects on
indigenous/local people. In a capitalist
system, there cannot be rational
management by people of the resources
on which we depend.
AMessage to the Commission 13
Workshop
Prof. Fred Magdoff
11. Resources are obtained and exploited as
inexpensively as possible and without
regard for the rights of the inhabitants or
for the pollution that occurs during
extraction, transportation, production,
and consumption, and disposal following
consumption. In such a system there can
be no thought given by capitalists to the
environmental and social consequences
of their actions.
AMessage to the Commission 13
Workshop
Prof. Fred Magdoff
12. Capitalism needs to be replaced with a
socially just, equitable, and
environmentally sound system. One with
profound democracy, with worker and
community control of the factories,
shops and fields.
AMessage to the Commission 13
Workshop
Prof. Fred Magdoff
13. One that brings out and rewards the best
in each of us—compassion for others
(instead of individualism), cooperation
(instead of competition and warfare), and
sharing and reciprocity (instead of greed).
AMessage to the Commission 13
Workshop
Prof. Fred Magdoff
14. And, instead of profits, the whole purpose
of the economy must be to satisfy basic
human needs for everyone—for food,
housing, clothing, health care, education,
recreation, and a healthy environment to
live in.
AMessage to the Commission 13
Workshop
Prof. Fred Magdoff
15. I wish you well in your discussions and I
am confident that they will help your
continuing struggle for social, economic,
and environmental justice.
AMessage to the Commission 13
Workshop
Prof. Fred Magdoff
