This document summarizes research on developing new agronomic techniques for growing high quality organic sweet corn in maritime Canada. The researchers established test plots to compare a high intensity crop rotation with three vegetable crops in four years to a low intensity rotation with one vegetable crop every four years. They found that transplanting corn was necessary to establish stands due to cool, wet spring conditions that caused direct seeded seeds to rot. Using red clover as a cover crop, zone tilling it into the soil, and applying biodegradable mini mulch helped establish the corn transplants and provided nitrogen. With this system, they achieved marketable yields of 35,375 ears per hectare worth $26,531 at $9 per dozen,

The document discusses a study examining the potential for establishing oilseed-to-jet fuel value chains in wheat producing regions. The study used focus groups and interviews along the potential value chain. Key findings include: 1) Canola biodiesel production could impact community capitals and benefit soil and water resources; 2) It aligns with cultural values of sustainability and independence; and 3) Successful implementation relies on social networks and trust between actors. The researchers conclude that holistic change to agricultural value chains requires considering interactions between various community capitals and stakeholders.
This document summarizes research on irrigated forage cultivation in Ethiopia. Key findings include:
1) Annual crops like oats and vetch and perennial grasses like Napier and Desho grew well with irrigation, yielding 8-23 tons of dry matter per hectare.
2) Double harvesting of oats and vetch outperformed single harvesting and yielded more than sole crops.
3) Irrigated forages can provide enough fodder to produce 280kg of milk from 100m2 but market opportunities also exist.
4) Further research is needed to scale irrigation forages and develop value chains while ensuring sustainable use of land and water resources.
Southern SAWG--Building soil organically: how and why organic management worksparsonorganics
This document discusses organic soil building practices used at two farms, including a 13-year crop rotation with 18 cover crops and 18 cash crops. Key principles of the system include feeding the soil with diverse organic amendments to support soil life, replenishing what is harvested through cover cropping and compost, and maintaining living roots and plant coverage as much as possible to build soil organic matter. The system minimizes tillage and uses crop-specific organic fertilizer recommendations tailored to each field. While effective, the discussion proposes further enhancements such as shorter fallow periods after cover crops, increased cover crop diversity, and reducing phosphorus inputs based on soil tests and crop removal.
This document discusses aquaponics, an integrated system of aquaculture and hydroponics that aims to produce food in a sustainable way. It operates several aquaponics projects in the UK and abroad, including educational projects and commercial systems. Aquaponics recycles the waste from fish into nutrients for hydroponically grown plants, providing multiple outputs from one system while using resources efficiently. It has the potential to address issues of increasing population, resource constraints, and food security through local, integrated production.

Reserach Poster: The use of solar energy in the Biodiesel Industry as a susta...Jemaris Martes
This document presents a solar-based distillation system for purifying glycerin, a byproduct of biodiesel production. Glycerin purification processes are typically expensive and energy intensive. The system was tested on glycerin-methanol mixtures, with the goal of separating methanol from glycerin through distillation using solar energy. Density measurements and a calibration curve were used to analyze purity. Testing showed the solar system could yield at least 80% pure glycerin, meeting the objective. The system provides an eco-friendly alternative to conventional glycerin purification methods.
Plant-based biofuels are produced from plant materials as an alternative to petroleum-based fuels. Biofuels include biodiesel, ethanol, methanol, and pure vegetable oils produced from feedstocks like palm, coconut, jatropha, rapeseed, sunflower, corn, soybean, peanuts, and algae. Biodiesel is made through a chemical process where vegetable oil is reacted with alcohol and a catalyst to produce esters and glycerin. While industrial-scale biofuel production has led to environmental issues like deforestation, small-scale community biodiesel projects can work sustainably by empowering local farmers, creating jobs, and achieving self-sufficiency through rural electrification and

ITC has implemented several forestry programs to meet its pulpwood needs in a sustainable manner while benefiting farmers. Through research, ITC developed high-yielding eucalyptus clones and promoted their cultivation through farm and social forestry programs. These programs provide farmers with financial and technical support to plant trees on their lands. Over 15 years, these programs have resulted in 1.96 lakh hectares of plantations benefitting 107 million farmers. However, the challenge now is for agroforestry systems to match the incomes generated from block plantations and agricultural crops grown separately. ITC aims to work with research institutions to enhance tree and crop yields under agroforestry to provide higher incomes for resource-poor farmers
