1) Why Subcultures Exist
a) Some people are more serious about their hobbies
i) There has been an increase in cult like following of certain hobbies and media
forms due to globalization.
b) Tired of the same old thing and want something different
i) If you want to find something new, it’s quite easy because people are
constantly trying to come up with the next big thing.
c) Technology
i) Everything is just a click away. Whether you Google or YouTube it, your
bound to find what you want fairly easy.
d) Rise in the youth’s voice.
i) Today’s generation is resourceful as we have grown with the technology that
many of our parents didn’t and therefore because we in someway know more
of the world at this age, we tend to feel more outspoken. We like movements.
2) Fanzines
a) Magazines devoted to things such as music, film, and various other
hobbies. (Ex. Bromide, Shojo Beat, KPOP)
b) Fan fiction.
2. i) Stories written by fans for fans about their favorite character and such.
ii) Range in their content. Cute to Sexual.
iii) Sometimes have such a following they are published. (Koizora& 50 Shades)
c) . . Fanzine culture is deemed to have centered on reciprocality and a mutual
interest in the Perpetuation of fan culture itself as a community (Jenkins, 1992).
i) People are curious about why, how, and to what extent fans are.
ii) Fandoms.
3) Media& The Internet
a) Through the use of the internet subcultures have thrived. (Ex. Blogs, Youtube,
Social media)
i) I can follow all my favorite celebs and know exactly what they are doing
(Kinda creepy but true).
ii) I can chat with others about my biases.
iii) I can what videos and the like on my favorites.
b) It is said that because we generally know what we are looking for we almost
never accidentally stumble upon something.
c) Do Online Communities strengthen or weaken subcultures?
4) Resistance
a) Kpop is an example of a genre of music that has thrived on its ability to go against
mainstream pop music.
i) Takes me back to the good old pop days.
ii) Quality music.
3. iii) It’s Different.
b) Kpop is visual and for it’s fans.
i) They give me what I want.
ii) They dance.
iii) They tell a story or entertain.
c) There is gender fluency.
i) The guys aren’t afraid to move their hips.
ii) Gag Concerts! Where males do girl group dances.
5) The Advantages
a) Economical
i) You can sell products based of the culture.
b) Globalization
i) Your talking and discovering media from all over the world.
c) Creates new subcultures
i) Creates cultures within cultures through big followings.
