Demographic Characteristics, 2011
Employed Residents Area Jobs
To summarize some
information, majority of
employed residents and people
with area jobs are white
residents.The main age
demographic for workers are
those above the age of 30.
For our proposal, we have
concluded that information
such as race and gender were
insignificant as evidence.There
were no points of
discrimination or sexism that
can contribute to our project.
AN OLDER NEIGHBORHOOD
Census data and interviews with people around the
neighborhood show that Colonial Heights andTahoe Park
is home to an older population. This is an area that people
like to retire to.
This chart shows a comparison of households in
comparison to Sacramento County. There are less people
under the age of 18 years in this neighborhood in
comparison to the whole.
Even though the percentage of people under 18 years of
age is significantly less, the neighborhood still holds the
families of people from these older generations.
Unfortunately, some families are moving out of this
neighborhood and to suburbs such as Natomas and Elk
Grove because there is lack of opportunity for their
children.
“When I grew up, I moved to Elk Grove with my daughter
and out of my mom’s house.”

But with the school closed down, we only
know how much has changed.
Other than Educational Services, there are
also Health Care and Social Assistance Jobs,

Accommodation and Food Services
Due to the lack of different types of
businesses in our area, one needs to
travel elsewhere for certain
industries. Retail Trade and
Accommodation and Food Services
are much more prevalent in areas
with more developed market
centers, which Colonial Heights and
Tahoe Park does not have. Public
Administration, since being tracked,
is popular but the spike is not as
prevalent as it looks.
Similar industry trends we see here
are health care and Social
Assistance and Educational Services.
These jobs are at an uprising as
these same industries in area jobs
decrease.

WHATTHE NEIGHBORHOOD WANTS
Place for meetings:
“Recently, there was teenage girl who committed suicide on Marin. Many of the neighborhood gathered together and
agreed that we needed a neighborhood watch. But the problem is that there is no safe space for us to congregate.”
A park available for having picnics and for families to hang out
“The place I feel comfortable hanging out is the library.”
An updated baseball/softball area, more neighborhood sports
Upgraded basketball courts
“The unfortunate part about Joseph Bonnheim is that the area is gated. I’ve seen people jump the fence before to play
basketball. One time the area was gated, and I saw a family with a stroller walking her children around the park. How did
they get behind the gate? One time I wanted to open the gates for everyone, but it provided a liability for me. I would want
the city to knock down these gates and make the basketball courts and field available for everyone.”
JOSEPH BONNHEIM GYM
BASKETBALL BLACKTOP AND FIELD
PROPOSAL
Transform the elementary school into Joseph Bonnheim Resource Center
To begin, only make use of the blacktop, portables, gymnasium, restrooms, and field
IDEA INTO ACTION
We believe there is a lot of support around the neighborhood that want to turn Joseph Bonnheim into something
amazing.
Joseph Bonnheim Elementary was owned under the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD)
The City of Sacramento is in charge of Parks and Recreation
By keeping in contact with both of the SCUSD and City of Sacramento, there can be a push to use the gym, field,
and blacktop as a recreational park and center.
With a lot of generated interest, we can gather the neighborhood together to speak about how they want to
change the school.
CLOSEST COMMUNITY CENTER
A) Location of new Joseph Bonnheim Resource
Center
B) Location of nearest community center, United IU
Mien Community Center.
Distance between the two centers is 2.2 miles.
Other community centers:
United IU Mien Community Center
George Sim Community Center
Fruitridge Community Center
Having a new resource center will highly benefit the
Tahoe Park neighborhood
BUS LINE NEAR CURRENT JOSEPH BONNHEIM ELEMENTARY
Closest bus line is the SACRT 212 on 21st Avenue
73rd Street (WB) and Quonset Dr (Wb)
About two blocks from the current Joseph
Bonnheim Elementary School
FOOD DESERT
There are very few places that provide fresh produce and the ones that do are either sub-par or far away
Welco Supermarket
mentioned by several residents as their go-to place, but would prefer a place within walking distance
Large selection including seafood and meats
Family Grocery
very small selection
not very fresh
overpriced
Tahoe Food Market (now closed)
Family Market
No produce
Convenient for sodas, alcohol, eggs, milk, and other processed or packaged snacks
HOWTHIS IS PLAUSIBLE
Only has to be facilitated by an entity/ institution because it is city owned land
Since it is city owned land, the public has access to the grounds and its amenities
The catch: whoever takes on the responsibility must be sure that all regulations and codes are up to date and are abided by.
Collaboration with UC Davis students, community members, and volunteers
Possible internship program with UC Davis Students
Willing and excited residents could participate in any department where they can best utilize their talents
Ex) teach classes, partake in supervision of the youth, dedicate free time to the upkeep of the facility, etc.
Clear Communication and enthusiasm!
Only take over part of Joseph Bonnheim
Gymnasium, portables, field, and, restrooms, and blacktop area
POSSIBLE PROGRAMS
Classes to expand skill set of the community
Ex) cooking, child care, health & nutrition, basic accounting, basic - advanced computer competency, etc.
Community Garden
To better the health of local residence
Invest time and money within own community
Walking distance
Child Care Services/ Recreation
So perhaps both parents can now enter the workforce
Safe place for the youth to congregate and engage in positive activities
Mentorship Program for theYouth
To increase the level of educational attainment ultimately bettering residence life chances
EDUCATIONAL SERVICE JOBS PREVAIL
With the recent closing of Joseph Bonnheim educational services has seen a drop
With the re-opening as a community center, professional educators who are also residents can now work again in the
community
Decrease commute time
Attraction of more professional educators adding to trend in growth of educational service jobs
JOSEPH BONNHEIM IS THE FUTURE
Increase amount of area interaction and area employment
Improve skillsets of the community that will benefit them
Bringing the neighborhood together
