Colonia flavia pacis deultensium show
1.
2. Nearly forty years ago the idea that the name of the ancient city Deultum has
a Thracian origin and means "place between two swamps” was published.
Besides the list of arguments in a purely linguistic publication, it was
focused also on the characteristics of the local terrain - low hill,
located between largethe Burgas marshes, drained in the 20's of the last
century
Archaeological excavations in the place of "Kostadin Cheshma” on the south
bank of the river Sredetzka, during the years of 1981-1985, helped to obtain
new evidence for the existence of aThracian city.
The discovery of many coins from the end of I century BC. - early I
century AD., within the zone "A" of the reserve, suggests that the Roman
military colony was established not on a barren field, but in a very densely
populated area.
3. During the time of emperor Vespasianus (69-79 A.D.)
over the north shore of the river Sredecka, the colony
ofmilitary veterans from the VIII Augusts’ legion, was
found. The name of the new city was Colonia Flavia Pacis
Deultensium. Those legionaries were distinguished
during the putting down of the great rebellion in Judas
and during the civil war for the confirmation of the new
emperor’s authority.
4. During the second half of the third century, the city was
destroyed by the Goths. But immediately after that it was
rebuilt and fortified. Usually they used the older
buildings for the main architectural elements of the new
buildings. During that time, a huge public bath was built.
The discovered parts of it until now give us the reason to
believe that this is one of the biggest constructions of this
type in Europe during its time.
•The building had a perfect system of water supply and
canalization. Large parts of the hypocaust (system for air
heating of the tenements and water) are well-preserved. The
bases of various pools with, a marble stones used as cover,
and some walls with a height of over 2 m are also well-
preserved. Probably throughout his visit in Deultum during
November 296 Emperor Diocletianus used that public bath.
