Holistic approach to reducing vehicle interaction
hazards
Rather than focus on technology as the solution we
have looked to embed a culture that utilises all the
tools available (including technology) to improve safety on
the mine site.
Our primary focus has been to implement strategies
wherever reasonably practicable, to eliminate the
circumstances where there is potential for vehicle
interaction.

Collision Awareness v Collision Avoidance
Collision awareness
• Personnel are potentially exposed to the hazard. The technology makes
them aware.
» Potential collision detection
» Spatial awareness
» Proximity detection
Collision avoidance
• Personnel are not exposed to the hazard. The technology allows
potential exposure to be avoided.
» Remote imaging
– Pit cameras
– laser scanners
» Machine guidance

Reducing the exposure reduces the potential for interaction
Avoidance
• Technology can provide an additional tool to reduce exposure to the
hazard.
Awareness
• Technology can provide an
additional tool to assist operators
in making a decision

Eliminating / reducing opportunities for high risk interactions
• Traffic flow
• Intersection designs
• Separated roads
• Sequencing and scheduling
Providing alternate "virtual" means of accessing the mine
• Webcams & Lookout points
Administrative Controls
• No overtaking of moving equipment
• Reduced numbers of pit licences
Risk Management Considerations 2

The last line of defence
• Until we are in a position for the on board technology to truly avoid the
collision (ie autonomy) then we must consider it as a last line of defence.
• The gadget should only "buzz" once all the other mechanisms have
failed to avoid interaction
Risk Management Considerations 3

Is there a silver bullet?
Technology solutions need to:
• Be robust and reliable
• Not introduce new hazards
• Support mining personnel in making the right decision
• Be implemented utilising effective change management
• Be part of an overall program to reduce exposure to hazards
Selecting the right technology

• Our historical records indicated the majority of interactions
occur:
• HV : HV
• At or about the dig / dump face
• At low speed
• Primarily an equipment damage event
• Invariably involving a truck
• HV : LV
• At intersections
• 1 vehicle at high and 1 at low speed
• High risk of serious personal injury

• Implementation of the standards
• Engineered / Separated roads
• Reduction of complex intersections
• Reduction of light vehicle traffic
• Initial installations of CAS technology at multiple mine sites in
controlled areas
• Appointed a central resource to support implementations and
accelerate Thiess knowledge of the technology
• Engage the whole workforce
• Facilitate change management
• Whole fleet installation of the selected technology at a site.
• Some initial issues with installation and configuration
• Now moving to multiple site implementations
What we have done
14. SUBHEADING IN UPPERCASE
HERE ARIAL 12pt GREY
Australian Mining
• Implementation of the standards
• Many projects have struggled with the implementation of changes with
personnel resistant to change
• Generally the change has been implemented well, although the time
taken has been varied based on workforce engagement.
• Initial installations of CAS technology at multiple mine sites in
controlled areas
• Reasonable performance of the technology
• Limited failure in the controlled environment
• Some useability issues identified and resolved
• Whole fleet installation of the selected technology at a site.
• Real problems with installations by subcontractors – we are redoing the
work
• Some limitations in the technology identified and resolved
